[MTR] Efficiency Breakthrough Promises Smartphones that Use Half the Power - Page 2

What about overhead? With this new tech polling so frequently won't this hinder the actually bandwidth on the connection. Why wouldn't they just implement the phone to be in on or off state. It's late, so maybe I'm not understanding this correctly.

Won't happen. The industry always takes more battery life improvements and power reductions as a way to make the battery smaller instead of increasing how long you hold a charge. It's all about making things thinner.

Not claiming to know much about tech jargon, but "asymmetric multilevel outphasing" reminds me of a PLL timing chip. No clue what weight that statement holds.

On the other hand, it could be that they've just switched from one big jump in power (from idle to working) to many fast and small ones, thereby allowing for a lower standby power without causing that distortion they were talking about. I suppose you could think of it in terms of sidestepping Vdroop.

I figure you're right. Wasn't there that Razor or something where you could pay a premium for extra battery life?

Razr Maxx with it's ridiculously long battery life. Whether it's a product of efficient hardware, software, or the 3000mAh battery...

I don't think you can just offhandedly say wont happen. You do not think it will happen. There is a limit to how thin mobile devices can become and still feel comfortable in the hand. The phone companies also know that battery life is a big selling point. As mobile processors become more efficient and batteries have greater charge retention capacity, it is within the realm of possibility to get 2x the battery life in a device. Will it happen, and will it be widespread? I do not know. Possible, yes.

Oh Yeah.. Pair these up with those batteries anodes(?) that store 3x the charge than normal ones and we got a great battery life for our mobile devices.

This should lower the latency of power saving options on intel processors (EIST) by allowing the VRM's to increase voltage faster (C1E) when switching from idle to load
