buy now or wait till christmas? - Page 2

I ended up falling for a 7950 now that they are offering the games. I'm hoping i can get at least $50 for those 3 free games if I don't play them. When the 8000 come out they'll be expensive just like the 7000 series when they came out. I plan to get a second 7950 when they go even cheaper.

okay. For the rest of my rig, i'm quite actually happy with how the 970 is holding up. Will probably look in to another intel deals toward next summer if i want to upgrade.

One of the cards i've been looking at for a while is the 7970 and with it now being cheaper i kind of want to jump to buy it, but also at the same time it's almost time for them to transition to the 8000series so not sure if i should wait a little longer or buy now.

your sig rig says you have Gigabyte hd 7970. so do you have that card or have you made the purchase? If you haven't get a HD 7950 . the HD 7950 is 3 - 5% slower than HD 7970 at same clocks. so the best price perf is with HD 7950. the gigabyte and sapphire cards have excellent coolers and are some of the best overclockers.

Also the pricing on the next gen will not be as good as HD 7950. typically you will pay a premium high price like for the HD 7970 in jan 2012. so go for HD 7950.

Yeah, 7950s, when aggressively clocked, compete with 7970s. They have extra overclocking headroom (by power and thermally), given that they are missing 256 SPUs (some 7950s have 7970 PCBs).

As far as 2560x1440, one 7950 at ~1100/1300 is definitely capable of great frame rates. Even stock, with the details pushed to max and crossfire turned off, my 7950(s) are able to provide a near constant 40 FPS in BF3. In some titles I've found crossfire to be a detriment (micro-stuttering victim here) and I am forced to turn it off; but one card pulls through.

Concerning Nvidia (you have a GTX 470, any loyalties?), my buddy has a GTX 660 TI with a 2560x1440 monitor that surprisingly performs on par with one of my 7950s (fast GDDR5 makes up for 192-bit bus). You can get a 660 TI around the same price as a 7950 too. Anything higher resolution though (dual 2560x1440), and I'm sure the 7950 would pull ahead.

Good luck!

no brand loyalty. Back at the time i had 2x 4850 and i sold them off to go back to single card and it was the 5870 vs 470gtx and the 470 was similiar performance i would say for cheaper so i went with that.

Yeah always stick with a single GPU for the most consistent experience. HD 7950 overclocked to 1.15 Ghz should let you play the latest games like BF3 at 1440p at 50+ fps. The GTX 660 Ti is no competition for the HD 7950 . With the latest 12.11b drivers HD 7950 (1.15 Ghz) is faster than GTX 680(1.25 Ghz)

Sounds good. You might try to overclock what you got a bit more to get a bit more power out of it (or is heat a problem with the 920?).

But really, my 2500k is a bit faster than your 920, but most games don't use all that power anyway. Borderlands 2 does, but it is a rare exception. Really, I would be happy running a 920 still... Maybe even a Core 2 Quad if I was really strapped for cash.

Definitely wait until the next upgrade cycle, since you aren't exactly underpowered. smile.gif

Personally, I'de be inclined to wait until next year at this point since newer cards will be coming out.
