Long distance connection

Thread Starter
I need to connect ethernet between 2 buildings that are about 450 ft apart and are not line of sight.

I don't know anything about fiber optic cable, but there is no way I am running copper ethernet between the 2 locations because of afternoon thunderstorms.

Looking at this fiber optic cable and 2 of these media converters

I have DSL at my current house and I am moving into a mobile home on the back of my property while I remodel my house. Seems that glorious AT&T has no more DSL connections available and you have to get on a waiting list, so I am not disconnecting the DSL at my home because I may never get it back.

There is no way I can go for 6 months without internet, so I need other options. My real problem is that I have never messed with fiber optic cable and it seems like the only practical solution.

I would run the telephone cable with an amp instead of running fiber especially if there's any work going on around the cable itself with the chance of it getting damaged.

What pieces would I need to get this from ethernet to coax and back to ethernet? Won't I have the same type of surge problems from thunder storms with coax that you get with copper ethernet wire?

The thunderstorm issue Im not entirely positive on the only full proof is burying it but at those distances I wouldnt want to dig that much haha. I would just be a little worried spend that amount of money on a fiber run only to have something fall on it and ruin it for good.

edit:
Are you completely out of line of sight? I assume trees are in the way more than likely?

I will have to run it through PVC conduit anyway. Not because of the construction, but stinking gunner2.gif squirrels. They chew and climb on everything.

I would have to ground and put lightning suppressors on any metal cable that I run because of the thunder storms where I live. It would probably be less hassle and cost less in the long run to use fiber optic cable.

My problem is that I have never messed with fiber optic cable before.

Yeah I found the converter I was looking but it costs around $120 so I see where the fiber would be cheaper. The only thing I would be worried about with that ebay listing is that it hasnt been tested to even work. if you bite on it make sure you have those converters to test it out.
If the jacket is in good condition and hasnt been battered it should be ok. I think your biggest problem will be the squirrels they seem to get into everything near me

Seems like I have 7 days to test it and return it. It does make me suspicious.
