Need some help deciding on a processor

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
So as you can see in my sig, I am currently running on an Athlon ii x4 and I want to upgrade. Right now since the new piledrivers just got released I am looking at the 8320 or the i5 3570k. I will mostly be doing gaming, but I also want to stream, as of now my current processor cannot handle playing a game and streaming at the same time. Is the extra 4 cores going to help? I know that single threaded the i5 will beat the 8320 easily. Also I plan to overclock.

You will get better performance with Intel. AMD can't compete in the CPU market at this point.

Games aren't really optimized for more than 4 cores.

Dont forget that streaming takes up a thread as well.

It depends on a lot of things;

If the game you are playing is optimized for, and uses 4 cores, then it'll happily run on the Intel.

Though, if that same game is played while streaming, then the game will be shoved over and only be able to use 3 cores or share a core with the streaming program. Therefore, reduced performance.

The AMD will not have this problem as the streaming program can take a core for it's own and use it's instruction set on a single core and all its' threads. Therefore, the game will be more stable and paced on the AMD under this situation.

Though that leaves 3 other cores sitting there doing nothing but jerkin it...

Now, if this situation is altered in any way (the game only using 3 or less cores), then the Intel will win.

Of course clock speeds and technologies are important to consider... I dont think you can go wrong with either as an Athlon is a significantly older generation; so the difference will be great. I remember when I moved from a Phenom II to a A8... The clock speed on the A8 was slower, but the TurboCore technology made the clock speed equal; and the caches were larger and everything... The A8 is sooo much better!
