Crashing 5970 trying to find cause / fix

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
hello from new zealand,

I have a sapphire hd5970 (stock clocks) I've been trying to sort out whether my graphics card is faulty and whether to buy a new one or if there is a possible fix to the problems i'm experiencing.

For the most part,.. the card runs fine, games like killing floor, Cs : GO, doom 3, minecraft, fear, among many others run without crashing at all. But several games, generally newer ones with dx11 (most recently, nfs most wanted, dishonored, crysis 2) crash the driver to a black screen for about 30 seconds, some games it recovers only to crash again several minutes later, some games crash and have to be restarted... Or ill have to hard reset.

This comes up in event viewer as 'Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.'

I always use latest drivers & sapphire trixx with a pretty aggressive fan profile, not under load is about 40 degrees and under load roughly 60 degrees, I also watch GPU-Z while this happens and can't notice anything out of the ordinary.

The latest game i've played with it 'Dishonored' was fine for the first few hours, then it crashed,.. then continuued crashing seeming to crash closer and closer (every 5 min down to every 30 seconds).. Even when i restarted it continuued doing this. Turning down the 3D settings in Catalyst down to lowest stopped the crashing so I went through them one by one trying to pinpoint which was causing the problem but it doesn't seem to be a specific one & appears to be just crashing when there's too much load on the card. Other games like the new NFS most wanted crash with all settings down as well as ingame.

Recently i've replaced the fan in it as it had shot bearings and had a chance to replace some disintegrating thermal padding, but this hasn't helped.

The problem was evident in my old rig as well as my new one with same gpu.

Here's what the card looks like under gpu-z not under load;

Just played 5min of NFS Most Wanted - crash (screenshotted about 1min after)

Passmark, MSI Kombustor, winamp's milkdrop all run fine

I've tried; formats and full reinstall of windows, reinstalls of game, drivers, software, updates (dx, game etc), playing with every 3d setting, running just driver no catalyst, barebones pc, barebones apps/services/startup items etc, memtest86 multiple passes no errors, running games at 100% fan, different gpu output on the power supply..

*games do not crash in Winxp x86 though*

Any suggestions or time to get a new card..? thanks guys

Try lowering the clock to 650MHz & retest.....

Didn't think to try that.. Yup !! that works, solidly tested over the last day and no crashes.. Thanks smile.gif

Any idea why the card is having trouble at its rated clocks?

nice rigs by the way

Thx smile.gif and glad it worked thumb.gif

A lot of high end cards that have been used for a couple of years need a little extra volts to be stable at thier factory clocks.
If you want to increase the speed, increase the voltage a little and test...

EDIT: to put your rig in your sig, here's how:

Makes sense, will try upping the voltage slightly to see if i can stabilize it. Thanks you for your help smile.gif will be able to get some more use out of the card before i upgrade. ..

Ok, so i've been having a little trouble lowering the clock to 650 on teh card, seem to be getting some flashes of artifacts, mainly on my second monitor and in 2d mode, Games on one monitor work fine and don't crash or artifact and when i revert the clocks back to normal the flashing goes away.
Tried several programs to change the clock, catalyst, trixx, afterburner..

So I went through and upped the voltage in afterburner 50mv at a time at default clocks, testing for crashing at each point, Eventually got to it's max 1299mv / 1.3v and still the driver is crashing..

Any ideas where to go from here, or why it's artifacting when lowering the clock? I think this card is just about had it but it would be sweet if i could get it stable somehow.

Thanks smile.gif

Sorry for the double post,, Still trying to stop the card from crashing.. I can't seem to get the card to crash at all in any stability testers like furmark & kombuster so running NFS most wanted until it crashes is my only test at the moment..

I have noticed some unusual things while monitoring with HWiNFO64 (Though they may be possibly just normal behaviour);

#1 - My card defaults at 950mv, MSI Afterburners default for it is 1049mv, At default vcore varies between 950mv and 1050mv while running
#2 - After crashing with an increased vcore (1.2v) GPU1s VRM drops back to 950mv while GPU2s VRM remains 1.2v (same goes for any voltage)
#3 - GPU2s VRM Temp & Amperage ALWAYS seems to be a lot lower than GPU1

Heres some sshots if it's any help

Idle;

Crashing at default vcore;

Crashing at 1.2v;

I've also tried disabling Powerplay Throttling and the Vcore variance but even with solid 725/1000 and 1050mv, still crashing frown.gif

Could it be possible that my PSU (Acbel M88 900w) quite a cheap one, is causing this? It has 5 12v rails, each over 25amps , I think the 5970 requires 50amps on combined 12v rails and a 650w minimum psu..

My next mission is to try and fix the second monitor flickering with 650mhz, will post if i get anywhere

Multi rail designs in quality PSUs are safer than single rail designs. 50amps x 12v = 600 Watts. You 5970 needs a max of 375 watts (2x 8-pin + PCI-E).
I don't know your PSU brand or the OEM, but you can try a different PSU (borrow one from a friend) and test.

If you want to know more about PSUs, click on the links in my sig.
