Linux on a SSD ? - Page 2

Grub can boot GPT partitioned drives without UEFI. There is no reason to use MBR partitions if you're on Linux.

True, although if your not going to use efi boot theres also little reason not to use mbr assuming you don't need more then 3 primary partitions. Basically I think its a manner of how many partitions you need rather then having anything to do with ssds

It's something i picked up from the Arch Linux wiki, especially in relation to SSD/Advanced Format drives. GPT has native support for the advanced format, and isn't hacked in like in mbr (not that mbr wouldn't work).

Personally, i don't think it makes much of a difference, but if you have the chance to start out with it, why not?

No real reason, I just know GPT drives acted up for me (on OEMs ten fold) on some bios systems. I don't need more then 3 primairys unless i'm dualbooting, and with all the gub issues i've had i'm fighting the urge multiboot (one of these issues cost me %25 on a paper for being late) same reason I didn't just reinstall arch, since A. It was the arch grub package B. the latest kernal paniced and cost me almost an hour of work on top of the grub problem So, MBR is a way to force me to VM and not risk my system again. But Main thing is that some bioses act up with it.

So far I have - Start partition at - 2048
- Format Ext 4
- Add "discard" to the mounting options in /etc / fstab
- Place the swap partition on the first spinning drive
The SSD is only 128gig so I will be formatting it as a single partition and mounting as "/"

No point. 10-15gbs is twice hat most people need for / if they have a different /home. Having home different makes reinstalling easyer

I was just going to use a home folder in the / partition . I thought that a single partition on a SSD would have better wear leveling than having a separate / and home .

Please correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that wear leveling is done on a much lower level so partition/filesystem won't affect it.
