Linux on a SSD ? - Page 3

If you were feeling daring you could always try out the new "flash friendly" FS (F2FS) that Samsung developed for Linux. It's supposed to be "better" for SSDs.

I install the system as normal, without a swap drive since I have 8 GBs of RAM. No issues here.

I don't think any distro's have it as an option yet but since he sounded like he knew his way around I figured if he wanted to try it out he could. I certainly wouldn't because of my skill level (I have stupid "sparse file" warnings when using Btrfs) but I'm aware of other options that aren't just point and click ready. redface.gif

You really don't need to do anything special. New SSDs have plenty of write life to where it really doesn't matter to worry about anything. Just do as you normally would when you install. Just leave make it so you have at least 10% free space and you're set.

Making multiple partitions doesn't really do anything. The only thing that would do anything is to give it more unallocated space (over partitioning) so the drive doesn't ever fill with data and has more clean free space to run GC.

The "sparse file not allowed" error is actually a bug with GRUB2 in Ubuntu, not with btrfs itself or you in particular.

As for F2FS, it hasn't been pushed to the mainline kernel yet, but it's very easy to get working with some patches.

Thanks guys .
I found from various forums around the place that installing an SSD on any distro with 3.0 kernel does not necessitate all the rigmarole of earlier versions .
All done and working fine .
I did find though that the WD Velociraptor seems to work better on Mint than the SSD . Not benchmarks it just looks and feels more responsive .
