External USB recording interface - (without the need of drivers if possible).smile.gif

PC -> Optical USB -> External Sound Card -> All my gear:

Condeneser Microphone AT2020 XLR to TRS stereo(I can change it to XLR - XLR if needed) with Phantom Power +48V
Headphoes Sennheiser 555 TRS Stereo and
AMP RCA Mono Left and Right.

if possible that could also have MIDI that would be great.biggrin.gif

Budget: 150-200$

Thanks.smile.gif

Edit:Added info also update post.biggrin.gif

Wait... what?

That makes no sense...

First of all... You can't connect a microphone via SPDIF... Secondly, you can't phantom power anything with TRS. Please re-read your post. i think you left some words out.

Thanks for the reply.smile.gif

I thought it was obvious that will connect PC -> Optical -> External Sound Card, but I added it anyway.thumb.gif

Im using my mic now via TRS Stereo on ESI MAYA44 which has phantom Power and a mic pre-amp.wink.gif

Any other suggestions would be helpful..

Thanks.smile.gif

Well, even with that its still not quite clear, now that I think about it. An external sound card.... That hooks to your internal soundcard via SP/DIF in and out, I suppose? That's hooking 2 sound-cards together, both devices would be hooked up to your computer... The optical link would then be completely pointless, no? There's really no point in linking an internal sound card to an external.

What you want, then, is a SP/DIF compatible MIXER, and AFAIK, they don't really exist, especially in your price range.

If you relax your optical requirement, things become very different. Basically you'd want to forget about the internal sound card and go all-external.

For instance, the M-Audio FastTrack Pro will work with RCA SP/DIF, according to what I see. There's no advantage of optical over RCA unless your're worried about ground loops (don't be). But, it would still require a hookup to your computer to control it, so you might as well use it as the sound card!

The PreSonus Audiobox will work with USB2. There's a ton of other options with USB2, such as cute little Mackie mixers. These would basically be extermal soundcards; no need for SP/DIF.

There is also a ton of options if you have a firewire port, All in your price range.

If you're willing to put a PCI device in your computer, than pretty much any Layla sound card will fit your bill!

The Audiotrak Prodigy Cube usb should work for what you need it to do, It doesn't have Two TRS Jacks, but monoprice has TRS to RCA Cables that you could use. It does have a Mic Amp in it besides a headphone amp. It also has other outputs too. http://www.audiotrack.net/products/PDCUBE/ it can be found on ebay or bought from the site for $99 dollars. The only thing it doesn't have is General Midi plugs, but there are usb midi adapters That you could use if you need it.

If you want flexibility and connectivity, the Mackie ProFX8 has about every analog kind of connection you could ever want. Again, no MIDI.

The other devices we've mentioned are only 2 channel analog in, meaning you can't use them to record from mike at the same time as you record analog stereo!

The Mackie would do all of that, as well as off-CPU EQs for everything, and more. Its physically a little big, but is more future-proof.
