Title says it all. I tried resetting my BIOS. Not sure what could be causing this other than a bad motherboard. I say motherboard because the BIOS constantly gets corrupted. When it gets corrupted the USB 3.0 ports stop working. I'm installing from a USB thumb drive that's plugged into a USB 2.0 port. Ideas?

unplug everything but mouse/keyboard/monitor from the back of your rig, then try it, if that doesnt work, i suggest making a bootable setup cd and trying that way, personally i just let windows 8 download and install itself right away

I tried the first thing you mentioned, but the lockups still occur. I'll try making a bootable disc when I get home from work. As for Windows 8 downloading and installing, doesn't that perform an upgrade? I like to do clean installs of OSes.

Okay. First, do you have a backup and a second computer to use? If so... then we are go to do some stuff that might be dangerous otherwise.
First, simple everything down. Take out your GPUs and run integrated. (Just to eliminate problems). If you are installing to your SSD, go ahead and unplug the HDD. Some of this might be needed, but for me it just eliminate variables.
2. Load defaults on your motherboard to undo anything that might have caused some problems, like overclocking. If you plan on using RAID, maybe change that setting now.
3. Flash your motherboard to the latest version. If you already are on teh latest version, reflash.
4. If you already have a way to install windows (USB drive), then boot from that. Inside the windows installer, delete every partition on your SSD. Everything. Then make a new partition. Windows will create a second very small partition, and this is to be expected. Go ahead and install.
5. See if your bios gets reset or anything. If nothing bad happens, then maybe your problems are over.

I figured out that having USB 3.0 enabled in the BIOS was causing the crashes, so I disabled it and was able to install 8 without any issues. But now when USB 3.0 is enabled, it causes the same crashes that I experienced during the setup. I guess Windows 8 doesn't support USB 3.0? lol

Are you running the latest USB 3.0 drivers? If not download the latest driver from the VIA website.

Many Windows 7 USB 3.0 drivers are incompatible with Windows 8. When I first tried to do an upgrade from Windows 7 (since have done a clean install do to other issues) the Windows 8 setup prompted me to uninstall the USB 3.0 drivers before it would continue with the install of Windows 8. After the upgrade was finished Windows 8 automatically installed new drivers that were compatible. With my clean install my USB 3.0 drivers were/are compatible from the get go, although I can't be sure they work since I don't have any USB 3.0 devices.
