i5 or i7?

Thread Starter
A simple question:

i7 950 + MSI X58 PRO-E
vs
i5 3330 + Asus P8B75-V

Will be used strictly for gaming, and the components cost exactly the same amount of money.

Which will perform better?

Are you buying these new or used? If you're buying new I wouldn't get either, but if you're buying used I would go with the i7. You can overclock that one.

If buying new, I'd recommend buying an i5 2500K (Sandy Bridge) or an i5 3570K (Ivy Bridge) for gaming, and a Z77 motherboard of your choice.

If buying used and choosing between those 2 specifically, like magic8ball88 posted above me, buy the i7.

i5 new, i7 used. as for 2500k it costs in my country 10$ less than 3570k, and 50$ over my budget, so literaly these 2 or fx 8120.
I don`t care about build beeing future proof, i just need it to be able to push out next 2-3 years (said ahead before someone starts 1155 is better choice discussion)

If it were me I wouldn't get the 3330 just because you can't overclock it, but if you don't plan on overclocking anyway it might be the option for you. The i7 would be slower and you probably wouldn't benefit from hyperthreading.

This.

Some will say that "Games will never use all 8 threads", and they are right. But if you are like me when you game, not only do you have the game up, but an operating system, a voice chat program, and 1 or 2 web browsers and/or other things all running at the same time ... and they all can use more than just 4 threads.

Get an i5 of the latest generation (3000 series, Ivy Bridge). Less heat and doesn't do any worse in games than an i7.

I'd take the i7 any day of the week over the i3.

I would too. It's an i5 by the way.
