Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 7970

Hello all!

I bought a Sapphire 7950 950MHz version and I must say it is an awesome card and a great deal faster than my previous GTX 460. The core temps are decent on both idle (~40 C @50% fan speed) and 100% load (~75 Bitcoin mining @ 70% fan speed).

However, I've noticed that the VRM temps are quite high, even at stock clocks and volts. GPU-Z reports VRM Temp 1 at 87 C when at max load and VRM Temp 2 at 65. If I overclock from 950MHz @1012mV to 1100MHz @1037mV, the temps go up to ~81 core and ~105 on VRM 1 if not higher. I also don't want to raise the fan speeds any higher than 70% because they start to get loud quickly after that (and already a bit loud for me at 70%). The fans also seem to be off a bit because they are louder and make a weird, slight buzzing(or rattling?), sound between 72-80% fan speed and then go away higher than that, but then the fans themselves get quite loud at those speeds.

With the VRMs quite hot, and the fans a bit noisy for optimal core cooling, I was looking into Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 7970

From what I understand, the installation is horrendous, but the end results are fantastic.

My questions I have before I decide to make my purchase are:
  1. Do you think it is worth the $70-80 purchase? If not, why not?
  2. Are all the components that come with it sufficient or could I see even greater results purchasing different heatsinks for the memory and/or VRMs.
  3. How is the thermal glue? Should I use something else? If so, what do you recommend?
  4. Would you say there are any special instructions for the installation with the card I have? Or should I follow the instructions for a reference 7970?

Sorry for a bit of a long post, and thank you to anyone who helps me out on this decision!

I installed one on my 6970 and it was awesome. The glue is rubbish though. I used some Sekisui #5760 thermal tape and it worked a treat. Installation is a pain but it's worth it.

I thought about getting one of these, though the XFX 7970 Double D that I got was a revised one apparently with the Magenta DVI slot (I've read it's an indication of them not being reference) and was wondering if it would still work, seeing as people mention huge drops in temps with it. My 7970 hits 75C while running Guild Wars 2. Though I do have three monitors running, GW2 only hits 55 max with one monitor connected.

Is the XFX 7970 with the magenta pcb reference, I'd really like to get a new cooler for it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looked that stuff up and it is cheap and it sounds like it works great.

I would still like to hear what others have to say about this cooler though before I go through with this purchase, but so far it's looking like I'll be getting it.

The cooler is nothing short of amazing, it's extremely quiet, runs cooler than anything I've ever seen. Caution about the crap glue tho, get something else right away

Alright, I did ended up purchasing the accelero for my graphics card.

A couple of problems

  1. Instead of waiting for the Sekisui #5760 I decided to go ahead and installed the cooler with the thermal glue they provided. I must say, that was the BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER! The glue is absolutely terrible and I should have listened to you guys beforehand. It isn't terrible thermally by any means. The problem with the glue is that it lacks any sort of adhesive property at all. I had trouble getting some of the heat-sinks to stay on.
  2. When I booted up, the temps were amazing! BitCoin temps only got to about 51 degrees Celsius, with VRMs about the same, when previously they were ~75 core, 85 VRM 1, and 70 VRM 2. The problem? It crashed soon after (Gray screened after about two minutes). Then I could only get it to start a couple times, then no times at all (bios failed to pick up the video card at all after a first few tries of rebooting). I'm thinking some sort of short is happening but I'm not sure where and I'm currently stuck at my college dorm and won't be able to get a good look at it and replace everything with the Sekisui #5760 until I get back home next week. The instructions on where I am supposed to put the thin insulation tape strips to protect the sensitive components was not helpful at all so maybe I just didn't put them in the right area. Anyone who has better instructions for the insulation tape would be much appreciated. I'm just glad I got the Z68 board instead of the P67 so I could use on-board in the mean time, seeing as how my laptop decided to completely die around the same time hmmsmiley02.gif
  3. When I was looking at my heat-sink to see where a possible short was, a few of the heat-sinks kept moving around and some falling off, this prompted me to just give up until I had the tape when I got back home.

Some more information on the crash. It booted up just fine, the fan being completely silent at 50% and absolutely fantastic temps (just above room temperature instead of around 35-40 degrees at idle, 50 bitcoining instead of 70 previously by the minute mark starting from idle). When I started the bitcoin mining client, at about two minutes in (51 on the core) I experienced a gray screen and my computer crashed. On restart, if I remember right, it started momentarily and then crashed again. Every restart there after I was prompted by my motherboard that it detected no graphics card (LED by the PCI-E slot). Inspecting the card, I couldn't think of where it may be short-circuiting except maybe by #2 or #3 per this picture . The only other thing I can think of is that some of the old TIM on the core got smooshed in between the components surrounding the core, but that should be non-conductive and shouldn't be the problem. My graphics card also has a second BIOS. Switching to that, at first my motherboard found the video card, but then my monitor complained of wrong timings set up and so it refused to give me a picture. So, really I'm not sure what is going on now that I think about it (-_-).

Any help would be appreciated.

You should have just used the sapphire stock VRM/Memory full cover heatsink instead the accelero heatsinks (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/ACC_3860_DxO.jpg). Anyway, sounds like the card is dead if Mobo doesnt recognise it. Some heatsink is probably touching on the PCB and caused short (Heatsinks cant cause short if they are just top of the VRMs even without tape). When i installed mine, i left it dry for 20 hours then popped it back inside my PC, been working fine for couple weeks :/.

I think my card is dead dead at this point. The Sekisui #5760 tape came in the mail and I reapplied the heatsinks with it. I also flipped the backplate around (Noticed that one side has plastic and the other doesn't which I didn't notice the first time around). Unfortunately the card still appears dead, even in my dads computer which the card worked just fine in for about 5 minutes before I left off for college the first time around installing. My dad believes that something happened in transit and a short or something happened when I got to the dorm and fried my BIOS chips since the second bios worked (booted, but monitor didn't like it) for a go once and then on restart was no longer recognized again by the mobo just like the first bios.
