[Solved]Strange GTX580 behavior - Crash/Issues

Thread Starter
This all seemed to start after i swapped out my 2600k for a 3570K (The 2600k went into my server). At first the PC would boot and i wouldn't have a screen to look at. I could use remote desktop to get in and turn it off, but there was no signal from the DVi output on the 580. Every now and again it worked and i could play games without any problems. I could run stress tests and the whole lot and the GPU wouldn't crash.

Anyhow i cut my losses and did a full reformat completely wiping my drive with a secure erase and started from scratch.

Now instead of that strange "No screen" issue at start up the graphics driver is crashing with that "nvkldmm the GPU driver was reset" while playing games.

I can't really understand how the 3570k would cause these types of problems. Maybe it's a dying GPU, i'm at a loss. The GPU is watercooled and never goes above 50/55c.

Any thoughts?

These things are so finicky, that is why when I have a system working, I don't bother with side grades.

Make sure card is seated properly and power cables secure. Check for an update driver. Make sure card is not getting hot and revert to stock if overclocked.

Yea i didn't want to touch the system, but I needed a CPU for my server at home and i needed an older generation Xeon which was more expensive than a current gen (A non Ivy-Bridge part). So it was cheaper to buy the 3570k and move the 2600k over to the older motherboard.

I've pretty much tried all the generic suggestions. I guess it's an incompatibility somewhere. I'll just have to see how it goes.

Card works fine in 2nd PCIe slot, but not in the 1st.

I moved my Xonar DX to the 2nd x1 PCIe slot rather than the 3rd one and it's working fine....

Who could have known.

I found someone with the same problem:
http://rog.asus.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-15567.html?s=4f917a470ac308bcb86feffedfc21404

It's the CPU causing the problem. For some reason my GTX580 isn't working in the 1st PCIe slot on my Sabertooth z77, just like that guy in the link above. He couldn't get his card to work in the top slot. Anyhow i've moved my GTX580 down to the 2nd slot and all is well. The only drawback is that i have to run it at x8, but a few runs of 3DMark 11 suggest that it isn't a problem (Scores the same as with x16).

So problem solved, but i've contacted ASUS about this and hopefully they can release a BIOS update to fix this issue, If not, at least i have a working PC
