AMD dropped the ball on the 8 Core Vishy's - Page 2

my asus m5a97 just added support for piledriver with a bios update. i imagine most 970's will , just mobo manufacturers are slow at releasing bios updates

970 is midrange and if not all of them can run a 83xx, then that means u have to buy a high end 990 this point going forward if u want guaranteed compatibility.
Actually, the boards with 970 chipset that don't support 83xx are low end boards with the 970 chipset slapped on it. I mean come on, 4+1 unheatsinked phases *shudders*. Midrange for example would be ga-970a-ud3, the asrock 970 extremes, asus 970 evos, etc.

You DO get what you pay for though I suppose, as those low end 970 boards are much cheaper.

look at the support list on this board, its even a rev3 AM3+ 970 board( pure mid-range) and won't run a 8 core Vishy
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4385#
the B75 is like 75 bucks from Intel and its a much superior chipset over the 990 and costs half as much.
Not being an Intel Fanboy on this, but this is a dumb issue for AMD to let happen

Hey dlee,

I've been observing the lack of 8-core support on some GIGABYTE AM3+ 900 series motherboard. It appears that the omission of 8-core processors from the processor support lists is only present on motherboards that have 4+1 phase VRM systems with no VRM cooling. The 970A-D3 rev 1.3-3.0 and 970A-UD3 have VRM heatsinks and retain FX-8XXX support. This is a move that, given high power consumption rates on 8-core processors, seems to make sense for now. Further validation tests may affirm whether it is safe/practical or not to run such processors on a motherboard. The GA-78LMT-USB3 formerly did not support 125W Phenom II (despite supporting 125W FX) due to "validation failures" but was recently updated to support it, probably the validation took longer to complete or was re-done.

It has nothing to do with the 970 chipset at all, as my 970a-ud3 (8+2 phase heatsinked) has support, and I am currently running my 8350 at 4.6ghz on it.

I am just trying to raise awareness because common knowledge is that any 8 Core Bulldozer will run on 970 because it it is AMD's midrange offering, but Vishy won't even run on all 990's which is an expensive platform.

i7 2600k can run on any low end H61 even if u can't overclock it.

Again thats not amds fault. 970 chipset is just fine with 83xx the chipset has nothing to do with it. Its the manufactures being lazy refusing to release a compatible bios or the boards TDP is to low. Again nothing to do with AMD.

thanks for the info, just alot of my computer friends in my inner circle automatically assume that 970/990 automatically "should " support Vishy 125w processors since they supported 125w Bulldozers.

I guess I thought there was no way that 970 wouldn't support a Vishy 8 core since it did for Bulldozer 125w but I guess you are correct the makers are being slap happy with 970 these days.

Guess that means 83xx uses even more power than Bulldozer lol.

This is my motherboard. It supports it. Don't displace your anger on AMD. It is clearly gigabyte not believing that motherboard can handle 8 core vishera cpus.

Hold on. There's a chipset below 970?

No, looks like newegg says 970 -> 990X -> 990FX...

At least for Giga it pretty much goes:

970 Tier 1
970 Tier 2
970 Tier 3
990X Tier 1
990FX Tier 1
990FX Tier 2
990FX Tier 3

So I have no clue where you're getting this "970 is midrange" thing. It's the lowest you can buy in the 900-series.

technically the 760g and 880g are the low end

biostar make a 960g, but it basically a 760g chipset.

there is no real "960g" since AMD found it more cost effective to reuse 760g and 880g for Bulldozer in the low end.

Maybe the problem is that I am going by chipsets instead of tiers like you suggested, I am pretty sure Gigabyte make a 880g board with higher phases that could support a 125w 8 core Vishy.
