No, looks like newegg says 970 -> 990X -> 990FX...
At least for Giga it pretty much goes:
970 Tier 1
970 Tier 2
970 Tier 3
990X Tier 1
990FX Tier 1
990FX Tier 2
990FX Tier 3
So I have no clue where you're getting this "970 is midrange" thing. It's the lowest you can buy in the 900-series.
There are plenty of chipsets below the 970 that have the black am3+ socket.

Few examples include the geforce 7025/nForce a630 chipset, the 760g, the 770, the 880g, etc.

If they aren't 900, they were never meant for FX at all, the vendors just hacked it together for whatever twisted logic they had going on.

Not that 700, 800, and 900 are all that far apart from one another.

Didn't read the whole thread, but this thread is kind of pointless... AMD didn't drop the ball on anything, power consumption is lower on the 8 core vishera then bulldozer. It is up to motherboard manufactures to update their bios to support new cpu's not AMD.

biostar makes the fa-990fxe that is at a great price and fully supports BD and the new Vishy's,
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=560

$129.00 , talk about bang 4 your buck biggrin.gif

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BIOSTAR-TA990FXE-AM3-AMD-990FX-SATA-6Gb-s-USB-3-0-ATX-AMD-Motherboard-with-/300775660709?pt=Motherboards&hash=item4607a05ca5

and biostar updated their bios for vershy's back on sept 5th, thumb.gif , talk about being ready for this , they have been there, done that, if your looking for a new build and your thinking about an amd 8 core build, i can't see you going wrong, i bought my board back in Oct of last year, i have a BD fx-8120 on it, i'm ready for a new Vishy when i buy one, and when steam Roller rolls in, i still won't have to upgrade to a different board. $129.00 board lasting through three generations, DUDE, cheers.gif

Intel trollers seriously... That's why most people should read their board manuals before purchasing. Just as bad as Intel coming out with a new socket every year.

There some 970/AM3 motherboards that support Piledriver 'unofficially.' I believe someone from these forums managed to put a 8350 with a 880G motherboard without any BIOS updates.
