OCZ Gamestream 700W not turning on.

Thread Starter
This could be a real newbie question.

I just bought this PSU a week ago. When I came home, I plugged it into a power outlet in the wall, but lo and behold. No power, not anything. I returned it to the shop, got a new one today, same spiel...no power.

Now here comes the newbie question. Do I actually need to hook it up together with a motherboard so that I can check and see whether the PSU is working and how well? Or am I just incredible unlcuky to get two dead PSUs?

Thank you.

The PSU needs to be hooked up to something (a computer or a tester) to turn on anything... If you flip the switch on the back, the PSU will turn on, but nothing will be there to show you it's on.

What did you think it was gonna go "ding-ding" or flash or something when you flipped the switch on the back? lol

Well, not "dingding" or "kaching", but I was hoping to see a light or maybe the PSU fan coming to life. Can you give a little more technical explanation of wha is going on, or a link to where I can read up on it? Apparently I know not a lot about PSUs

You can jump pins 7 and 14 I think (the green and black ones, on the row they are 4 in from the ends)

do as frostbite says; you have to be pulling a load to get the power supply to come but nice power supply odds are lmao you returned a perfect power supply because you are not knowing of what you are doing!

Jump the green (start) wire to a black (ground) wire and it should start up. Use at least a 22 awg wire or lower (thicker) so you don't hurt yourself or the PSU.

Uhm, judging from my question, I best should not try to do any jumping.

I am just building a new system for myself, and I was going to pick up the parts one after the other. So right now I only have a case and the PSU.

I guess in all the other times I built a system, I always had at least the mobo as well, so this problem never arose.

I think they chances are 99.9% I returned a perfectly working unit

Anyone got a link so I can read up a bit about how this thing actually works etcetc?

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

Don't do anything. PSUs are not meant to turn on. They will turn on if you connect it to your mobo. Yes, this is an uber noobie question..

It's safe to jump it. Many overclockers use a secondary PSU to power peltiers and watercooling setups. You have an ATX 2.0 PSU. With some ATX 1.0 or lower PSUs, it could be unsafe to run it without at least a minor load on the 5v rail.
