Timing VS. Speed

Okay so I am getting into overclocking my RAM. I'm wondering, is it more beneficial to tighten the latency or to increase the speed (mhz)?

Also, does anyone have any experiences to share when overclocking the 4GB XMS3 1600 1.65V RAM?

Well that is still being debated. The idea is that more speed is useless if you have loose timings, and tight timings are useless without higher speeds. So essentially there is a trade off. The trick is to trade nothing. Meaning that you you can raise the ram frequency while trying to keep the timings as low as possible, or try to lower your ram timings as much as possible while trying to keep your speed as high as possible. So it would be better to go with either 1600mhz ram with 8-8-8-21 timings or 1866mhz at 9-9-9-24 than say 1866 at 10-10-10-30.

Now technically speaking 1866 at 9-9-9-24 would be the best because benchmarks seem to like higher ram speed.

Generally, RAM overclocking is worth it as long as you don't have to raise the first three timings by more than value for an extra 100MHz.

There are so many variations and versions of the DDR3-1600 XMS3 from Corsair that it's hard to make a certain prediction on how they will overclock - they might barely clear spec, might be easily capable of DDR3-2400.

Well it seems these get really unstable when trying for 1866.

You would need to raise your VCCIO voltage the achieve stability. Also, raise your CPU vcore by a slight amount, and make sure your set your dram voltage at 1.65. Leaving your dram voltage at auto can do more harm than good.

Speed is far more beneficial than timings these days, although after 1866Mhz the gains are incredibly small.

From what I've tested (mostly benchmark suites), high frequency with decent timings is nearly always better than tight timings with decent frequency. If you have to make a trade-off, go for frequency with slightly looser timings unless the only program you use is hyperpi (I think that was the only program that seemed to prefer tight timings with a lower frequency).

The newer Intel chips seem to love high speeds and not care much about timings (in regards to speed), so I would say go as fast as you can so long as you don't have to loosen the timings too much. Anything looser than CL10 @ 1866 or 11 @ 2133 is too loose IMO.

However, the Vengeance series is the "entry level" for Corsair anymore, a company that has become reliant on its name to sell product . If you want good Corsair memory, you have to pretty much fork out insane amounts of money for the Dominator series. I much prefer GSkill as I spent$120 ffor 16GB of 2133 9-11-10-28 that will do >2400 @ 10-11-11-30.

The unfortunate part here is that the memory already requires 1.65v so you don't have any real headroom to add voltage in order to hit higher speeds :/
