It really depends on what gets nicked & how badly. Tiny nick can make no difference, or result in a dead chip, can't really tell until it goes back in the board for testing.
If using a paste on the die that is conductive or capacitive with anything exposed in the PCB by a nick, it would probably be best to insulate with nail polish or something first.

Why can't one be ordered from intel without a lid?

Nicked my i5-3570K in three tiny places when delidding today with a double-edged Wilkinson Sword razor blade. Dabbed the nicks with nail polish, and am posting this message running on my new, nicked and de-lidded processor. smile.gif
I'm using Puppy Linux live CD for now.

I could see the copper shining where I had nicked the processor.
Haven't overclocked yet, just have stock air cooler attached to see if processor was dead or alive. Using IC Diamond 7 thermal compound.

My nicks were most likely caused by running the blade along the edge to get the blade started. If I ever de-lid again I will only firmly but gently push and slightly rock the blade. Keeping it as flat as possible.thumb.gif

Will ad this to Club once it's nice and full. Looking good and thanks for the info bud! thumb.gif

Do you see the copper in this tiny nick?

You may be disappointed if you fail,
but you are doomed if you don't try.

That's as much advice as I can give except this last note.

If you aren't scared to do something,
You aren't ready to do it at all.
Over confidence is your worst enemy,
Fear is your friend and makes you think logically and carefully on every step.

Just wait until he gets that razor back in his hand, and he is ready to go again...then lets see him be cocky tongue.gif

By the way, your avatar is the summary of this thread.

Can't wait to get my 3770k!

Valgaur should do one with 'just did it' as the accepted pic for the new members.
