[OcUK]7950 Crossfire vs 680 SLI at 5760*1080 (Eyefinity/Surround) - Page 2

It is not news that the AMD cards do better at higher resolutions. It is also not news that the FPS numbers scale better for CF than SLI. I would even say that it is not news that Nvidia needs to drop their prices.

But AMD has its own issues, too. Worse micro stuttering for multi GPU is the big thing to me. Nvidia gets away with a lower FPS number because of more consistent frame times. CF game support has been lagging behind sometimes, though that has taken a turn for the better and most likely will keep going that way since the Gaming Evolved program is getting stronger. Then there is that incompatibility issue with certain X79 platforms using CF and Eyefinity.

Sorry to piss on this parade, but FPS numbers isn't all there is to it. Though Nvidia really needs to get better at that, too, especially for the price. Maybe we will finally see GK104 at the price point it technically belongs to.

I dont have any problem in eyefinity with micro stuttering or any problem with my 3930k. I dont what you talking about. Multi monitor setups is the baby of amd.

Funny how some of the Nvidia fanboys still think Nvidia owned AMD in this generation.

Nvidia did own AMD when it released the 680. After three months of AMD having a 7970 out the 680 debuted first day out better performing for $50 less. AMD responded first by reducing prices. The past two drivers for AMD have been the turning point in performance truly. I'd give credit to the transformations going on at AMD from ground up that's shedding what they don't do well to concentrate on what they do.

Edited to add since I'm still last post: Nvidia has made an attempt to try and catch up this gen with one card running Surround but lack of VRAM and in a few cases bandwidth will hold them back from competing with AMD past 2560x1440 resolution from what I see others struggling with.

Nvidia did get owned. By being 3 months late.... In the computer world that is a decade.

For 3 months 7970 was best performance, and now again it has best performance. If you compare time as the King top dog, 7970 wins. Unlocked voltage, better scaling with overclocking, 3gb vram............ There is no contest.

True...so you see where the confusion might lay where it wasn't the 'entire' generation where AMD was on top was my point in reply to your post.

I can't comment much on Surround vs Eyefinity accept AMD does better in this arena from the numbers I've seen both this and last year, accept when Nvidia first launched the 680 and the numbers on Surround gave Eyefinity a run for the money in the HardOCP review. But I digress.....I came here to moderate the thread from turning into a flame war. tongue.gif

Please continue gentlemen. smile.gif

Thread Starter
There is no need to be pointing fingers and laughing at current NV owners as most bought them when the situation was different and besides PhysX there is little else as AMD's 3D has come along way i have read.

I'm bumping this because I now have more information than I did before when posting to this thread.

The article that Tom's Hardware Germany did on HIS 7970 X2 vs. Powercolor Devil13 7990 vs. GTX 690 is finally out in English. It shows the same basic truth that has been referred to many times on OCN: Nvidia's SLI has less micro-stuttering than AMD's CF. But it also shows the great results of running RadeonPro's Dynamic Framerate Control on 7990 (basically 7970 CF).

I've been trying to get rid of stutters with a frame rate limiter and to some extent it works. But when I tried RadeonPro build 1.1.1.0, I was stunned. At least my game of choice for testing, Deus Ex: HR, ran as smooth as anything I've ever played.

With Catalyst 12.11 beta 6 out, the idle clock bug sorted out and RadeonPro promising to deliver all kinds of goodies (not just Dynamic Framerate Control, but FXAA and seemingly SMAA support as well), I'm now really excited about AMD's cards for both single and multi GPU. Good times! thumb.gif
