Creating a file/print server or HTPC or a mixture..

Hey guys just wanted some thoughts about creating a file/print server or HTPC or a mixture?

Currently I have some spare parts at home -

Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe
AMD Athlon 3200+
3GB ram
Razer Barracuda AC-1 Sound Card
Nvidia GTX 280
Antec TruePower 550W

I'm kind of conflicted of what to do, I don't know if I should turn it into an HTPC or have it kind of a hybrid for a mixture of a File/Print Server + HTPC

I will only really be sharing mainly multimedia files on this system
i.e. music/movies/pictures

And the print server part there will only be only at tops two other users printing, but we hardly use our printer, a print job might be used once or twice a month.

I would be putting XBMC on the system.

Also if you can suggest an OS that would be great as well, Win7-64bit/XP-64bit?

Or any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks again everyone and can't wait to hear some of your guys's suggestions. biggrin.gif

You don't need true print server functionality; all you need is a printer hooked up to the server (ideally via ethernet over the network) that you then share out and connect to with your client PCs. The file sharing thing is easy, too; create folders and share them out.

Windows 7 32 bit or Windows XP would work fine. I'm not exactly wure what CPU you have, but since you're running a 280 in there I would assume that it's an Athlon 64 3200+ or better.

Yes my CPU is the Athlon 64 3200+

Was tired when I was writing this post left out the 64 up top~

Would running this rig as a file server + htpc be ok?
Or should I have those two completely separate ?

I was thinking it would've just been easier to keep all my media in one location with whatever media centre application I decide to use.

Does it make sense to put them both together?

No reason to separate them.

both of them can be done in your system. i believe you can also used that system as an HTPC. file and printer sharing is very easy to do.
