Below users' names it says "this user has earned X flames". Does this have to do with the amount of reps or posts? Please let me know because a flame sounds like a bad thing and there's' no explanation for what it is.

Yes. It's based on the amount of reps you have.

I don't remember the check points, but the more helpful you are, the more flames you'll get

thanks for clarifying it. I thought maybe a flame was a way for the community to know what level of infractions you have\ to shame the user into behaving.

I think it's more they don't think about rep at all and just go about their day lol.
