Canon 7D?

My dad is planing on getting a canon 7D. He's a amateur and I am wondering if this is a good camera for regular consumer use?
Its a very good camera, but if your dad is not shooting sports or other fast action most of the features he is spending the extra money on over a lower end body will be wasted.

exactly what jason said.

the 7D is pretty much a backup/entry level sports photography camera that also does video. if you arent shooting sports you honestly dont need the 7D that much. now it is a very rugged camera that can take a beating but its still just barely worth it if you are only buying it because its tough.

Great camera, but for that purpose I'd say it;s overkill (about $1500). Better to go a bit lower (say Canon 60D) take some of the money and find a better than kit lens, external flash, etc.

60D isnt worth it honestly. and the buttons on the back are annoying to use and overall i dont think it was well thought out on canons part and was rushed. 60D is a perfectly good working camera but just the ergonomics and all fell short in my opinion. just get a T3i or T4i which is pretty much on par with 60D

Any good cameras to recommend that has the best of both worlds? Taking photos and videos. Budget is around 2000 can go above If needed

T4i and use the extra money for better lenses instead of buying a nice camera and having cheapo glass

look at getting the 70-200 f4 non IS and 18-55 kit lens (comes with most cameras)

Is he against buying used? If you look around on some photography forums you can find used 7Ds in good condition with reasonably low shutter counts for around $1000. Of course, that is only if he needs it. I shoot the sports you mentioned with a 50D which works fine but the 50D has no native video. If you're ok buying used, I would go with the 7D since it is a good value at $1K. If not, I'd say go for the T4i since it has a newer auto focus system than the T3i. With all that said, you should skimp on the body in favor of getting good glass. I would recommend picking up a T3i and then getting a 15-85 and a 70-200 f4. Good glass is forever so it's worth the investment. Plus if your dad decides photography isn't for him he can easily sell the lenses without losing a lot. The same cannot be said for camera bodies unfortunately.
