7970 Cooling question

Thread Starter
I bought a Visiontek 7970 Ghz Edition card a few weeks ago. I'm pleased with the card but I want to keep it cooler. I bought a Thermaltake WATER2.0 Pro Closed-Loop CPU cooler on sale last week and want to use it for the 7970. From what I've read, a lot of people have had success with it on nvidia performance cards, but the only issue was the bracket. There is a guy that makes bracket video cards (link to his website) and I was wanting to know if anyone had success with it. Any suggestions or reasons this setup won't work?

Should work. If not you can just use zip-ties.

I've read many accounts of people doing this and it working for a few weeks then something goes wrong and their card stops working. Am looking for a more permanent solution.

Just got a confirmation from 2 people that had it installed (from a different website). Glad I was able to stump the community but also contribute an answer. smile.gif

They probably were doing it wrong. There is the official mod club you can read on this topic. Using a AIC is really no different than using a gpu only block. Don't forget you need a proper shim for the tahiti die, it sits lower than the raised protective spreader.

Thank you tsm! I did not read about this anywhere else but it sounds like it will make a huge difference. There's a copper shim on triptcc's website for $2.

I have the same card as you.
If you're going to do the mod, make sure you buy heatsinks for the VRMs. They get very hot without them.

This is what I had tested:
BF3 Maxed 1920x1080
Same with heaven dx11.

reference:

VRM 43
GPU 57

620 (No copper shim):

VRM 74+
GPU 63

620 reseat (No copper shim):

VRM 63+
GPU 53

VRM 75
GPU 63

Sir it's 100% totally okay. You need VRM cooling at least air flowing over some sort of heatsink/plate that comes with it.

Then use this man to make your dreams come true!

Yep stupid on my part, forgot to do research on 7970.
Posted temps just to show OP the VRM temps without any cooling.
