Posted temps just to show OP the VRM temps without any cooling.

those are awesome temps even without the shim. you were hardly making contact with the gpu and still managed under 70 which is better than the stock cooler.

Stock cooler is the reference.

I used 2 different water coolers for 2 different cards. I have a Sapphire 7970 oc card for my bro's computer and used the corsair h70. Its doing an incredible job and is around 30c on idle, and about 50c on full gpu load and is very quiet.

The Visiontek is giving me problems. I'm using the Thermaltake Water 2.0 Pro with a shim and bracket from dwood (just like the other card that's working perfectly). I have thermal paste between the shim and gpu and the shim and cooler. I did this twice but am hitting around 60c idle and 99c on gpu load (which I kill after about 2 seconds before it heats up even more). Any ideas whats wrong? I feel certain the cooler is not working but am not sure how to troubleshoot it.

The block is not making contact with the gpu. Heard those temps and scenario a hundred times before, always the same.

I recall seeing a difference between the 7xxx series.

Example: I think I saw the ASUS direct cu cooler for the 7970 and the old series and they're a wee bit different. check out different water blocks and you'll see what it means... if my memory serves me.

Should I use 2 shims to make contact or is there something else I should try?

Look and see if there is anything that might be keeping it from going on fully tight. Like a screw bottoming out or something blocking it before you try that. Also maybe ask around in "The Red Mod" thread.

I checked the connection and redid everything for a 3rd time. Still no luck. The shim is definitely making contact with the gpu, and the shim is definitely making contact with the cooler. Both radiator fans are running full blast and are noisy as hell (louder than stock, which is what I'm forced to go back to tonight). Just to reiterate, the H70 works perfect, the Thermaltake Water 2.0 Pro is a fail all 3 times. How do I know if I bought a DOA water cooler?

Listen to see if the pump is pushing water, check that the fans are spinning ..
