Thread Starter
I have windows 64bit installed, but I want a version of linux to boot on my pc for my folding so that I can increase my ppd. How do I go about installing linux on my SSD boot drive to let me chose which OS to boot?

thanks

Grub will be your new boot loader just select the winsOS drive as the boot loader drive during installation(image attached) and it will do it all for you.

I planned on doing the same so I partitioned my drive ahead of time. But, if I were you I would shrink you current windows partition towhere it's big enough for you, but leave enough for linux. Then format and install linux in the new partition you just created.

Not really that hard, partition about 20GB of space for Linux ( or more if you want, but it's not really needed unless you plan for it to be your main OS and you plan to store a lot of files on it ), then during the install select the advanced partitioner, choose the right partition, select the mountpoint / "root" and install.
Makes more sense once you're there, it's a lot easier than most may think ( easier than installing Windows most of the time tongue.gif )

so i couldnt just create a new drive partition then install linux on that:? Without having to shrink my current os.

Not unless you just have empty space sitting on your ssd that isn't formatted. :P There is really nothing wrong with shrinking the drive, your going to be losing some space for linux anyway. Really easy to do.

Basically all shrinking does is if you have 40 free gbs you take and make you current partition 20gb smaller and make those 20bgs into a new partition.

The other alternative is install it on a separate drive then use the BIOS to switch on boot. On Asus boards it's F8.

This way if you ever need to format and reinstall you don't have to worry about your bootloaders getting all tangled up.

This is my preferred method, but installing both to the same drive works equally well with a few caveats as already pointed out in the thread.

I have 2 physical drives and when I was running FreeBSD and my first attempt at installing LMDE I was doing what zinfinion is talking about. I'm not sure how similar LMDE's install is to Ubuntu but toward the end of the install it asked where I wanted to install grub as a boot loader and when indicate my windows drive it will ask me which OS I want to boot into. I might still be using the bios trick if I could make my linux drive the first drive in the boot order.

As shrak pointed out if you told Windows to use your entire drive during the install you'll need to change the space allocations and make a partition to install linux in. What you're telling the computer is to make a block of space for something other than windows to live in.

Why would you ever want to do that? Grub is fine.
