How to dual boot windows with linux? - Page 3

Separate drives / separate MBRs:

Don't like Linux anymore: Remove the Linux drive. Or format it for storage. Or whatever. No CDs needed, no commands that have to be looked up.
Upgrade/downgrade Windows: Detach Linux drive. Upgrade/downgrade Windows. Reattach Linux drive. Again, no CDs, no repairing grub, no nothing.

And suggesting that only one option should be given to a person is ludicrous. Who is to say that the only one given to him before I suggested separate drives is the one the OP wants? I can't say that. I also can't say that he wants my suggestion.

It is clear that we will never agree on this so I'm out of this thread. The OP can do whatever he wants, no skin off my nose. If I had know I'd take this much flak over a fully viable, more flexible, more robust option I would have never bothered posting in the first place. I've got better things to do than go back and forth with this. Thanks for opposing options and contributions to this thread.

I've run Linux exclusively several times, often for months at a time. I always dual booted with Windows primarily for gaming. I have to admit, I never considered using F8 to select my OS, though I can certainly see the benefit. Each time the thing that sent me back to Windows was something getting broken in my Linux environment and my inability to figure out how to fix it, preventing me from booting into Linux. Granted, the problem wasn't with GRUB, but if I had been using F8 to select my boot drive, it would have saved me having to pop in my Windows disk to repair the Windows MBR to go back to booting directly into Windows.

You can use a linux live-cd and ms-sys binaries (or use it while you're still in Linux)

Something I'd recommend is checking out BURG. I haven't gotten the chance to use it yet, but it looks most wonderful. There's a guide floating around the forum I'll try to track down for you.

Edit:

and

Should do the trick.

OK. I want to go the dual hard drive route. I have win7 on a 250gb ssd and a 1tb HDD for storage. I have a 120gb ssd that I want to boot Linux on. I am good up to this point. I have a 500gb HDD that I would like to use for seperate storage for Linux. Can I just plug in the 500 GB and go?

In the Linux install at the point you're defining your partitions you'd need to make sure to get them set to the correct drives. Each distro has it's own install process so we'd need some idea of which distro you're planning on using to be able to give pointers on which portion that would be. As far as which partitions go where..../home would be on the 500GB HD you mentioned. In this day and age /swap isn't as necessary as it once was, my arch install hardly touches it at all. If I were to opt for /swap I'd put it on the HDD as well because it's something that could be heavily written to and SSD's have a limited number of writes. I believe /boot is optional as well but if you were to use it I believe it would go on the SSD along with root. You should only need / (root) on the SSD and /home on the HDD. I'm sure the more advanced users will chip in their advice as well shortly.

careful with mint 14 kde 64bit iso, if the install doesnt finish and gives you an error about the bootloader then before rebooting use: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

Partition space in windows you want to dedicate to linux.
Boot off usb of dvd into linux live.
Double click install, select free space partition.
Press add, resize partition 5-10% for swap. Leave as logical.
Select the remaining larger part of free space make it primary and select root (/)
Click install and follow instructions.
That simple mate.
On boot you can select between windows and linux.

This thread has been over for almost 2 months, why must it keep getting brought back with redundant posts?

This guide should help you, if you want to use Mint (it is for Mint 13, but I'm assuming it will work for 14 too). Optionally, you can set it up so it uses the Windows boot loader to boot into Linux: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/06/06/how-to-dual-boot-linux-mint-13-cinnamonmate-and-windows-7/

Edit:
Yeah, I realize the thread is old, but I'll leave it here for anyone else.
