Disappointed with Asus Matrix 7970 Platinum so far - help?

Jesus i really regret selling my old reference XFX Core 7970, it was able to hit 1150/1600 at 1.150mV 75C 55% fan speed - there was a few reasons why i sold it (loud, non reference PCB incase i wanted to get an Accelero, etc)

In any case i got a Gigabyte Windforce 7970, and the stupid thing was voltage locked - wouldnt even sit at 1100/1500 without crashing...sure it was cool..but whats the point

So i decided to return it and grab an Asus Matrix Platinum price matched to $499CDN, and its not stable at 1230mhz@1.33mV hits about 81C before artifacts show up in Heaven demo - the XFX was $369CDN, about 25% cheaper

One weird thing is that i cant seem to overclock the speed without also overclocking the voltage - so it may be a heat issue, i dont know why the speed and voltage are binded together

I saw on other threads that theres supposed to be a little lock icon so you can change them independantly?

Also - i hit the +voltage button on the card itself so that its about 75% of max (purple) and set the Power Target to the full 20%

Should i also change LLC? Currently at 75%

Any tips would be appreciated - my last option is to either try and exchange for another Matrix and hope for a better GPU (this one has ASIC quality of 67%, my XFX was 87% - not sure if that matters) - or just call it a loss and pick up a Reference MSI 7970 for $359 and hope it doesnt come voltage locked.

I didn't realize any reference cards were voltage locked. That sucks.

Might as well do that, get a reference. Mine does 1200@1.2v

Good luck

No my XFX Reference 7970 was NOT voltage locked - the default was 1050mV, but i was able to put it to about 1150mV when i overclocked it to 1150mhz.

But ya for $550, or about a 35% more than the XFX, totally not worth it.

I have the Matrix Platinum. 1335/1800 bench stable. 1320/1775 game stable. Eats Keplers.

I would suggest returning it. Nothing wrong with that.

You're not the only one who is disappointed, my GPU Tweak doesn't even work!

Can you change the voltage/gpu clock speed independently? are you able to change voltage in AB or Trixx?

What are you exact settings?

Thanks!

I do not recommend leaving voltage and the core clock in autosync mode. Switch to advanced mode and click on lock icon to desynchronize voltage and core clock. I use only GPU Tweak as I find it far superior to Trixx and Afterburner. Load line calibration is left at default 75%. Power target is set at +20%.

Could you possibly post a screenshot of all your settings in GPU Tweak please? Thanks biggrin.gif

For the life of me i could not get the core speed <=> voltage to separate - i could not find the setting. Can you provide screenshots? As you can see from my first screenshot - that little lock icon is missing - how do i get to "advanced mode" of GPU Tweak.

Also - what version are you using - i think i was using 2.2.1.2 - did you do anything physically different on the card itself (extra connections, + - buttongs, 100% fan speed, etc)

On the bottom left of the program the half white/red hexagon is the advanced mode button. Try that and see if you can unlock the sync.
