Willie Lambert, 57, of Pittston PA, was sent down for 30 months and ordered to pay $450,000 in restitution, along with other co-defendants. Sean Loveday, 28, of Pomona, CA, was sentenced to 23 months and must pay $7,500 in restitution. Two more members of the gang, Jeramiah Perkins and Gregory Cherwonik, are to be sentenced later.

The defendants teamed up under the name 'IMAGiNE' to distribute via the internet copies of films only showing in cinemas. Their aim was to be the premier piracy group to do this.

I don't see how keeping the camcorder in a sock hides it... Your still walking around with a lumpy sock.

Seems fair... They'll likely get out much earlier than their sentence. Personally, I think they should be sent to labor camps were they can earn money to help pay for their fines.

I'm more amazed that this type of crime carries such a long sentence. I've seen car thieves and house burglars get less. Even seen people get less for violent crimes.

Ridiculous.

Seen the name around, but have no files from the group. But well, I do have a very open mind when it comes to "piracy" smile.gif

About the sentences, yeah, pretty rough. Here in Denmark, someone who's pirated would maybe get 5 years in prison, and have to pay 100,000 1,000,000+ of DKKR in fines. A gang rape of a 7 year-old girl, drunk driver who klled a family, or a man who breaks into a house and beats an elderly couple to death would get between 3 months to 3 years in prison, and pay between 25.000 and 100.000 DKKR in compensation to the victims or relatives of the victim.

Yup, the justice system sure is great!

This goes to show corporations rule america, people who commit violent crimes get less time and less fines. And how does one guy have 450K of fines and the other has 7.5k ??

Some people will never be able to afford such fines, half a million would take the average joe a lifetime to pay off, especially if your working near minimum wage. obviously the jail time is mandatory, but my question is, if you file bankruptcy, are you still held accountable to pay these ridiculous fines? if you don't pay the fines do they just arrest you again? potentially life in prison or life of enslavement it how it looks.

Who watches cams of movies anyway? O.o

Anyway, this kind of sentencing is mad. As pointed out violent crimes will often land you less time / fines in some countries. Not to mention those cases are proven. A case against a pirate is often based on a high percentage of BS. Such as "You pirated x amount of things and you would totally have bought all that with your student income anyway"... right. Problem is you can't prove a pirated copy is a lost sale, and you can't argue that you lost anything of any real value since you can make infinite copies of it for free basically. Another thing is they constantly refuse to give us a good alternative, like actively refuse. We recently got Netflix in Denmark, and i use my PC to watch stuff on my TV. Then i discovered Netflix has a lot of tittles that are only in HD if you watch them on a console or some kind of box due to publishers acting like jerks with their licensing.

Without condoning or condemning piracy i would say that they are really at fault themselves for this mess. Sure some people won't buy your stuff anyway no matter how good the service, but forget those, focus on the ones that would. Plus if a person has a low income period and pirates a game or movie from a company and then later gets money, i bet more people would be inclined to actually spend money if they felt treated well and got a good product, instead of in most cases being treated like scum even as a paying costumer.

On another note... media lobbyists can go to hell IMO since they keep pushing these kind of insane ideas into governments heads.
