Windows 7 or Windows 8? - Page 2

Just want to throw this out there, but have you considered linux? Like puppy dog linux would be perfect for a simple HTPC. I personally would not want to have to fight with any standard OS on something that is simply going to watch movies.

I'm a linux fan too but without being patronising puppy Linux will be difficult, if not more of a headache

sure it's fast and it will support xbmc in a fashion but the video drivers won't be upto scratch, the audio if it works will be 2ch, there is little chance of lossless hd.

further to that with lucid puppy your going to find it harder to map smb shares or receive dnla.

finally, booting up and shutting down isn't as clean

I'm in need of an OS for a system I am in process of buying. I think Win7 will be the one. Does it matter which version of the 64 bit OS I buy? Obviously, I assume I can't buy an upgrade, as this is a new build, but I would prefer to get a legit copy for as cheap as possible. Where should I look, and for which version?

Thanks!

I have used Windows8 ReleasePreview about 1 week it went out. I dont use my htpc for gaming but just movies and music. I just upgraded to windows pro about a week ago on the $15 upgrade. It took sometime to get use to it. Even my wife figured it out and she just learned how to save a word doc so yeah its not that hard to figure out. I have yet to have any drive problems. check it out for yourself and then decide.

I jumped on the Win8 Pro 64-bit ship smile.gif, took time to get used too, but once you get everything going its smooth smile.gif.

IMHO stick with windows 7 unless you have a touch screen monitor or you have mobile devices. I put Windows 8 on a laptop for about 2 hours and realized in that time that navigating through the GUI with a keyboard and mouse in what is left of a desktop is a pain in the A$$. From what I experienced in my short run with Windows 8 it seems fast but since I didn't go beyond that I can't speak to compatibility. I don't know or care what the general consensus is on Windows 8 is with the public at large however, I haven't seen any sales records being broke. I think retailers should however offer PC buyers a choice between 7 and 8.
