How do I go about shutting my hard drive up?

I have a WD Black 5001AALS mounted in a CM341 chassis on the bottom-most HDD bracket.

It emits an oscillating vibration which spreads through my entire glass desk and is pretty loud. I've already went about changing the case feet from the usual hard plastic one to gold ones with foam padding at the bottom, as well as fabricated my own 'dampeners' for the hard drive by adding small rubber pads where the hard drive sits and mounts.

I've had limited success with rubber screws though. Any other suggestions?

Are you sure the vibrations are traveling through your case? I was gonna say rubber feet for your case would do the trick, but sounds like the sound is just rattling anything lose inside the case.

I would just buy a SSD, I cannot stress people enough to buy one. You can easily find a 128 GB Samsung 830/ Vertex 3 for about 70$

search for "hard drive silencers". They come in many form's, A cheap way is to use "Felt Washers" from a hardware store, Depending on the case/hard drive mount it can disipate/dull the drone, works better than rubber.. but results are pending case design, also how close to the floor is the hard drive, maybe moving it up a bay or two will lessen the drone?

WD Drive are known for their drone and chatter. No performance or longevity affect, Design quirk.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's the drive.
I have my DS12025B12H's locked at 647RPM up ti 65 degrees C, and the reference blower on my 5770 is absolutely silent even when gaming because I'm in an air-conditioned room.

There is no mistaking the constant MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM sound of a drive whirring.
As for the clattering sounds when the hard drive is being accessed, I couldn't care less about that. I don't care about those sounds because they don't bother me constantly. But I do care about that resonance because it vibrates the surface I'm typing on as well.

I wouldn't buy an SSD for a few reasons, namely that they're expensive where I live (if I were to want a convenient warranty) and 500GB SSD's would literally cost me an arm and leg.

Let's face it - as a gamer, unless my SSD is that large, I'd have to have a regular drive running in parallel with the SSD and then that's going to be the source of humming.

Some sound proofing foam around it could do the trick. Might make it a little warm and toasty too, but nothing too bad.

Is it securely mounted in the bracket and is the bracket securely mounted to the case? It shouldn't be vibrating the entire case -that- much if everything is locked in tight.

Yup, it's locked in totally tightly.

I once experimented with loosening the screws a bit so it wouldn't transmit all its vibrations into the metal, but it didn't work.

Let's face it - the CM341 is a cheap case.

I'll look into foam padding but not much of a leeway for me, if you can see the amount of space between the motherboard tray and the side door is nearly zero.

Stab it with a screwdriver.

Seriously though. It sounds like the drive cage/rail is vibrating. Try applying pressure to various parts of the cage/rail, especially where it's riveted to the rest of the case. If it turns out to be the drive mount you can stop it vibrating by jamming soft material between the rails and side panels or by packing the space inside the cage with said soft material (not recommended due to drive heat).

OK, interim solution; or sort of.

I pilfered some of those long-ass screws and rubber grommets that came with my Fractal Define Mini, since I was only using 1 out of 2 of the drive cage assemblies that came with the casing, and from thereon only 1 out of the three drive caddies in the remaining cage assembly.

Used those screws and grommets to secure the HDD to the case. Unglam in a way - the rubber bulged in weird directions and the screws would never be able to tighten fully without me having to shred the rubber to bits (which would completely defeat the point) or having the screws turn backwards again.

At least it did quieten the drive quite a bit more.
Yes, it still hums and resonates but it's kept within the casing now - my glass desk no longer hums with it.
I think the next step would be beefing up the case feet a little - this is getting interesting.

i know its probally not pretty, but you could always use a small Bungee Cord to suspend the drive. it should soak up most of the vibration. heres a link to see what i mean.
