I reckon you'd be better off with a i3-3220 + a decent H77 board. Avoid Cooler Master PSU's like the plague and you might want to consider a Corsair 200R as at a $60 price point is the best 'budget' case out there if you ask me.

Definetly get the 200R and maybe some G-Skill or Corsair RAM. Even getting a B75 board would be fine. This trounces the i3 in power efficiency and overall performance (GPU can be important in home and office tasks). It's also about as power efficient or more (on both CPU-only and CPU + GPU tasks)

However, I would choose something small form factor such as the Apex DM-317 at NCIX for the case and PSU.

Hi ShotgunBFFL,

As soon as someone makes the claim that the Intel or the AMD solution is leaps and bounds better ( "trounces" ! lol ), you can flush their suggestions down the toilet because they are blinded by favoritism and haven't done their homework.

You can build with Intel or AMD and the sky won't fall. At every price point where there is competition, there are good options to choose from that offer various TRADEOFFS. Brand favoritism causes people to only see the benefits of their favored brand, and only see the drawbacks of the competition. I doubt you want your build to be influenced by such lunacy.

I will propose some build ideas, however, first share with us what specific programs you will be using and what sort of day to day stuff you expect the machine to be used for most often. Also, are you open to buying from other vendors?

We really do need to know what programs you will be running. And I wouldn't buy from only Tiger Direct, try to use a variety of other vendors it will save you a good deal of money.

This. If you look at the Anandtech review (check part 2 for CPU performance. Part 1 is integrated GPU performance I believe), they perform very similarly.

AMD (APU) would probably be a better choice if you're not going to get a discrete/dedicated GPU. Intel would be the better choice if you're going to get a dedicated graphics card.
