Audio suddenly only coming out of front speakers in 5.1 set, yet all still work in test?

Hey OCN, I've got a problem. I've got a 5.1 speaker system I've been using for years now without a hitch, and yesterday, I suddenly started having the following issue. Sound is only coming out of the front two speakers. However, when I test the speakers, sound comes from all 5. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting everything, reinstalling drivers, re-seating the sound card, etc, but to no avail. Any thoughts??

I should note that sometimes (as in, sometimes it works this way, other times it doesn't) when I am watching videos on YouTube/Vimeo/etc. or listening to audio via web players in Firefox, all of my speakers are working perfectly again, but my system sounds/iTunes/media players/etc all continue to only output through the front two speakers.
