Micro tower cases (Bolt/Tiki/X51), thoughts?

Thread Starter
Just wondering what people are thinking about the rise of this form factor. We are starting to get more companies making them.

Digital Storm Bolt:
http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/23/3542020/digital-storm-bolt-mini-itx-gaming sfx psu?
Digital%2BStorm%2BBolt.jpg

Falcon Northwest Tiki Pc

Alienware X51
http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-x51/pd - external 300w psu
Alenware%20X51.png?1326862930

Main features of these computers:
ITX, custom case. Higher end cpu. Full size gpu slot done by having a ribbon cable or daughtercard to run it sideways. Most of these ones above can go up to a 3770k, Nvidia GTX 680 GPU.

Pricing is typically a few hundred more than what you could source the bare parts for mostly, If you could have a case suitable.

My previous SFF was a SG04 case and felt that these cases and designs are different enough from these (almost console form factor) to have their own discussion if other people are interested. So what do you think?
As you get more power for your money in terms of computer components in the near future (than you do nowadays), driving the costs of parts you'll need for a decent PC gaming experience at a $200-300 price point, I'll see plenty of machines like these rendering consoles obsolete.

I certainly wouldn't mind having one of these to replace my PS3, but on the gaming side of things I only use it when my friends come over so we can play splitscreen on MW3 and play FIFA which the PC versions lack, otherwise I'd have one of those now.
I like these cases, but until you can buy them separately I'm not sure how much there is to discuss. There are plenty of HTPC cases with the same shape, some even come with the PCIe riser ribbon, but they lie flat and often only have picoPSUs. So, is it about the shape for you? Or about the idea that it stands up, looking like an oversized Wii? wink.gif

For example, this HTPC case is thinner than the Digital Storm Bolt, but only has 120W and you'd have to dremel a 2nd expansion slot for the GPU.

Or this one is bigger, has 4 half-height PCIe slots and a riser to a single-slot full-height. Does fit a proper ATX PSU though.

Digital Storm Bolt - Fail because it uses server grade 1U PSUs, which are super noisy. Reviewers have mentioned how noisy the system is.

Alienware X51 - Fail because it uses external power bricks.

Falcon Northwest Tiki - Not too shabby with PSU, apparently uses SFX sized meaning you max out at 450W with reasonable quality and noise. However, to keep the system stable they use a granite base. So, yes on small size, but NO on portability.

I think all these systems are going the "slim is sexy" look, but I'm not sure they bring any new portability or small size (in volume) to the SFF party.

Great idea, I look forward too seeing these progress more, with more cases being designed like these and encourage fellow OCN members too build there own. Would love too see BitFenix design a case like these to populate.

Isn't one of the biggest hurdles to using that layout the PCI ribbon? I've heard of issues using them like reduced performance, inability to mod (shorten), low quality suppliers, etc. To me that's one of the only reasons to be wary of this design... otherwise its a great option and seems like a good way to reduce size/footprint.

Extenders work fine for graphics use, less well for F@H or BOINC where 100% data integrity is required.

I believe you, but can you cite a source?
I wish there was more data out there on whether or not shielded extenders and the like are still susceptible to that kind of erroneous transmission.

Just as a response the original question, however, I don't believe that riser cards are necessarily as imperfect in their means of data transfer in comparison to extenders or cables, as many reputable server companies make heavy use of them.

There's a difference between riser cards, which reprocess/boost the signal and provide their own data integrity, and simple extender cables which are just making the wires longer. Making the wires longer introduces errors, there's no question about that. Of course PCIe has some data integrity layer built in, but if a line is not strong enough to transmit reliably on the physical layer, then there is decreased quality of service. What happens with decreased QoS is up to the peripheral. So storage systems used in servers will be using a much more conservative communication profile than a GPU does. For example a NAS may negotiate a higher QoS even at the cost of throughput. Your Geforce or Radeon may decide to favour bandwidth and discard bad packets after a number of retries.

See this thread where the guy made his own flexible extender. It seemed to work fine, and while 3DMark got a lower score with the extender, it was so close that I'd have to say it was within margin of error, unless the tests can be run a number of times with similar results.
