PSU causing speaker noise? - Page 2

Control pod? I guess some computer multimedia speaker set with subwoofer?

What plugs into where? How do the speakers get audio data from the computer?

Do the headphones make a pop on turn on/off too, or just the speakers? When headphones are plugged into the jack, does that shut off the speakers during normal operation?

The sub houses the "brains" of the operation. The amp and all the inputs and outputs.

Outputs (front, rear, center/sub) from PC go to input on back of sub. Each speaker connects to the sub. The controller thing is hard-wired to the sub

I just brought home a known good pair of speakers and they too are exhibiting the popping when starting up or shutting down. So it seems like its not actually the speakers, rather *something* with the PC. I even went so far as reinstalling the cheapo PSU and that too now exhibits the noise.

Im not sure what on the mobo could have started causing this. I had the PC plugged in during our recent storm but it was off (and we didnt have any power surges or anything). I figure the old PSU would have taken the brunt of anything bad...the new one was just sitting in a box. Could something on the mobo be at fault?

Im guessing the only real way to fix it might be to get an external sound card and hope it still doesnt happen. Not the worst thing in the world, just annoying that this started all of a sudden.

are the speakers powered? If so, can you turn them off/on?

Speakers/monitors.....last to be turned on...first to be turned off. This is what they preach on the audio forums.

I do audio recording with an extenal soundcard, and i use powered monitors. If i turn my soundcard on with the monitors on...i get the thump.

Yeah, they are powered. Since I tried to go back to the PSU that I thought DIDNT make the noise, Im starting to wonder if it was just a coincidence that I never turned the PC on/let it go to sleep with the speakers actually on.

Interesting that you even get the thump when using an external soundcard. I dont hear the thump if I use the speakers built into my LCD monitor, fed from HDMI through my video card. I was figuring if I got a PCI/e soundcard I would no longer get the thump.

The thump is completely normal for active/powered speakers/monitors when powering on pc/soundcard.
seen it discussed so many times on gear slutz.

However, the thump is not good for the speakers. make sure they are off when the pc/soundcard is being turned on and off.
