[TechRepublic] Combining Windows 8 and a Retina MacBook

They said retina support and didn't give us any and metro made scaling more complicated and annoying. On top of that, apple hasn't released boot camp drivers for 8 yet. Time to go back and reinstall 7 I guess.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro on a mid-2009 MBP, didn't come across ANY issues mentioned in the article. Installed Windows 8, ran the Bootcamp installer, and it was good to go.

Where did I ever mention a retina display? Quit being a smart-mouth. All I said was it works without manually messing about with drivers or settings. rolleyes.gif

i have not actually installed windows 8, this is according to the article. perhaps this has change already or the authors don't know what they are doing. or potentially the rmbp has slightly different drivers for the trackpad etc

Windows 8 has built in drivers for everything a mac needs with the exception being the newer models. Windows 8 on a 2011 Macbook Air works perfectly too. I'm not surprised to hear it ran great on a 2009, but even with drivers, any copy of windows is going to be a nightmare on a retina Macbook until Microsoft gives us halfway decent scaling.

but have you used a retina MBP with windows? the whole problem which the article is talking about is due to the retina display. At full resolution it's almost unusable, I speak from experience with the 15" RMBP.

Any other macbook without a retina display will have no problems. That's why you had no issues.

Case in point, here's a picture I took with my cellphone comparing the size of the log in screen icon in windows 7 to a dime with the 15" retina:

The whole driver thing is blown up anyway, I'm using nvidia drivers 280.26 for my desktops to test windows 8 with and I have no problems. The issue here is having the desktop scale since at native it's ridiculously small.

How did the high resolution of the rMBP give Windows 8 problems with scaling? It's not any different than a high resolution display on any other laptop.
I know you're an Apple supporter so dont take this the wrong way:

what other laptop has a resolution that exceeds 2560x1440 (what you normally find in a 27")? Not a lot. Windows 7 was not designed to display at that resolution with only 15". Windows 8 seems to be designed the same way.

"High res" in the Windows PC world usually means 1920x1200 in a 15".
