*Updated* AMD GPU Folding on 12.11 beta drivers and 13.1 WHQL drivers

Thread Starter
*Update 11/9/2013*

*Driver modifications are no longer necessary.*

FahCore_17 WU's have now gone live, and will be the standard WU's for AMD GPUs. Latest WHQL drivers (13.9) from AMD work for folding on all AMD 5xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx, and r9 2xx series GPU's.

*Update 5/8/2013*
If you are folding the new beta WU's (FahCore_17) you should run the 13.4 WHQL or 13.5 beta drivers whichever works best for your system. For more information on the new Beta WU's check out this thread: Core 17 Beta WU

*Update 4/25/2013*
The beta test of core_17 WU's has ended. I am currently running the 13.2 beta 7, with AMD APP SDK 2.7, drivers on my 7970 and 6870.

*Update 3/25/2013*
If you are folding the new beta WU's (FahCore_17) on 5xxx or 6xxx series GPUs you should run the unmodded 13.1 WHQL driver. 7xxx series GPUs should run the either the unmodded 13.2 Beta 7 driver or the 13.3 beta 3 whichever works best for your system. For more information on the new Beta WU's check out this thread: Core 17 Beta WU

There have been a few threads mentioning the problems of gpu folding on core_16 WU's with the 12.11 beta drivers, 13.2 beta drivers, and the same problem exists with the 13.1 and 13.4 WHQL drivers.

For those of you that updated to the 12.11 beta drivers, or the 13.1 WHQL drivers, you will know that the gpu usage was capped at anywhere from 30-60%, and as a result PPD plummeted.

What made this even worse was that even after uninstalling the beta drivers and reinstalling Catalyst 12.8 gpu usage was still stuck at 30-60%. In order to restore your AMD drivers, and get the gpu usage back up to max you will need to use one of the following two procedures.

You can get the modified drivers and cleanup utilities from DarkRyder's site here.
You can get Atiman Uninstaller here

*AMD has developed their own uninstaller tool that you can get here: Catalyst Un-install Utiliy*

!!WARNING!!

AMD's uninstaller has caused many problems for people running Windows 8, and there have also been problems for people on Windows 7.
Until the bugs in AMD's un-installer are worked out I would not recommend using it.

To remove drivers manually, follow the guide in this thread: tsm106's AMD How to Thread , and then proceed to install the driver of your choice.

Uninstall/Install Instructions (Click to show)
AMD 5xxx, 6xxx, and 7xxx series gpus:

1 - Uninstall current Catalyst Driver in the Windows Control Panel. Reboot in Safe Mode
2 - Run CCleaner registry cleaner. Backup changes to registry and fix all selected issues. Reboot
3 - Disable UAC. Reboot
*Steps 4 is necessary if Atiman is throwing errors and won't run normally. Otherwise run Atiman normally* Thank Axipher for this workaroundthumb.gif
4 - Open CMD as Administrator and run ATIMan
5- System will automatically reboot
6 - Install Bal3Wolf's modded 13.1 or 12.11 Beta driver
7 - Install AMD_Catalyst_12.11_CAP2.exe. Reboot
8 - Run folding client to ensure that gpu usage is at max.

If you are uncomfortable using the modded drivers, you can do a custom install of the 13.1 WHQL drivers.
- After selecting Custom install, un-select the AMD SDK, and leave all of the other driver components checked.
- After rebooting install the AMD-APP-SDK-v2.7 and reboot. You can get the SDK here: AMD APP SDK 2.7
- From here you can follow the remaining steps, and you should have a driver that will work with F@H.

There are some bugs in the 12.11 beta drivers and the 13.1 WHQL drivers that you can read more about in the 12.11 beta and 13.1 WHQL threads.

Beta Fahcore_17 WU Performance (Click to show)
*UPDATE 3/25/13*

I am folding the Beta Fahcore_17 WUs, with the 13.2 beta 7 drivers, on my 7970 and my 6870.

*I will update the charts when I have time to re-bench with the latest drivers.*

The following are charts of the benchmarks I ran on my 6870 and 7970.

6870 (Click to show)

7970 (Click to show)

Obviously, running the beta/modified drivers, and using the Atiman utility are at your own risk, but this was the only way i have found to get rid of, and or use, the 12.11, 13.1 WHQL, and 13.2 beta drivers.

Using a similiar method in Windows 8 on my 7950

  1. ATIMan Uninstaller 7.0.2
  2. Restart (you will no the uninstall worked when you boot up at 800x600)
  3. Install Driver and uncheck the SDK
  4. Restart
  5. Install SDK 2.7
  6. Restart
  7. Run Benchmarks

So something in the 12.10 Driver + Windows 8 + GCN drops folding performance a slight bit, but check out that massive gaming improvement...

At least we did pin-point the problem to the AMD Stream SDK.  I'll be firing off a email tomorrow to the guys I met at AMD's head-quarters at the last AMD LAN.

No problem, thanks to everyone who helped on this issue. If someone had some time to make a proper guide out of this with screenshots of each step, that would be great. I'd give it a proof-read and "The Editor's Blessing" :P

The OpenCL version in all of the above drivers is OpenCL 1.2. I believe that nothing was changed from Catalyst 12.8 WQHL to Catalst 12.10 WQHL, because AMD did not release a new SDK for 12.10.

As far as what is in the 12.11 beta driver I haven't had any luck searching. There are some bug reports on the AMD Developer site, but AMD has not released anything, that I can find, about the OpenCL driver that is packaged in the 12.11 Beta.
*edit The SDK Runtime in the 12.11 beta driver is 10.0.1084.2. The SDK Runtime in 12.8 WQHL is 10.0.938.2, so the driver team has tweaked the OpenCL driver.

Are you sure that you are stuck at 70-80-% usage. GPU usage while folding on AMD cards will fluctuate. My 7970 cycles from 92-99% usage, and my 6870 fluctuates even more from 66-99%

6870

7970

I have wiped and installed the drivers on my 7970 at least 10 times using the method in the first post. It is the most thorough driver cleaning you can do short of an OS re-install.

If you still have less than full GPU usage then there must still be remnants of the 12.11 Beta driver on your system. The only time I had that happen was when I skipped a step on my ninth or tenth test. I am not sure what is going on with your install, since from all the other reports I have seen Atiman Uninstaller was the only way to completely delete the 12.11 Beta drivers.
