Overclocking a VisionTek 4870x2

Thread Starter
Hey all need help with this.

I got a used VisionTek 4870X2 for $80 from some guy on craigslist.

Card works fine, and I installed old catalyst 11.12 drivers for it. It runs games, and 3dmark06 fine.

I'm replacing a Sapphire 6870 with it. I used Sapphire Trixx to overvolt and overclock my 6870.

Now, I'm having to use the Catalyst Control Center to overclock the thing but there's no voltage option, and the clocks only seem to affect the first GPU core and not the second (according to AIDA64).

Any oldbies with knowledge on these cards willing to tell me what I need to do to overclock both cores, unlock voltage settings, and tell me some realistic clocks to shoot for?

Thanks.

I have a Sapphire 5970, which is in my new build actually.

You don't need to stick to old drives. Install latest drivers.

Also, like me, use MSI Afterburner, check/enable volt option in settings, overclock and set your video card fan(s) to rev up with the heat.

Voila!

I installed the latest drivers but the card didn't show up in Catalyst Control Center at all. Literally all I had in it was Hydravision- no options for GPU overclocking, no options for 3D settings (AA etc), or any of that.

I installed Afterburner and it works for overclocking both GPUs, nice. Seems the most I can do is 800mhz core though, the slider won't go higher, and 950mhz ram. I tried it and it seems stable, temps in games are 60C, voltage is 1.274, I have a feeling this thing can do a little better on the core clock, not sure how to do it though.

I used to know how to get through the 800 MHz barrier on these cards ages ago. I'm overclocking them again for HWBot and for the life of me can't remember how to get past that 800 MHz. Rivatuner 2.24 and the latest MSI Afterburner didn't go past 800 MHz, and ATI Tray Tools didn't work on a fresh install with 12.11b drivers. Perhaps it requires older (9.12?) drivers to be happy.

You need to unlock unofficial overclocking with AB. Heres a quick link to get you started. Super easy to do but may cause issues with certain drivers like 12.11. But you cant use 12.11 anyway since its an oldschool card. Dont get me wrong thats an awesome card that keeps up with even todays 7000 series cards (minus the DX11 obviously), I just upgraded from tri fired 4870X2 and a single 4870 1GB to a 7950. The only problem with those cards is they are power eaters.

So, I ended up putting this thing in my girlfriend's rig since I can't do GPU folding on it and I'm in the Team Competition.

It seems to have no problem maxing out any modern game she wants to play, even at stock clocks.
