I have seen this before and I'm pretty sure it is not cause by any hardware failure. Would you be interested in knowing the supposed cause of the problem?

EDIT: but, first you should sand down the PCIe contacts on the 4850x2 with fresh clean printer paper to make sure dirt and finger oils haven' accumulated on the contacts over the years. I usually fold over a small corner piece and pinch the paper over both side of the connector with my thumb and middle finger and "sand" it don't the that way, I've brought back dead motherboards and cards to life that way.

Yeah I am interested in knowing the cause of the problem. I guess I still am not sure how it could work in one slot but not the other if there were oils and dirt on the contact points.

So I just looked at the contacts on the video card and I have some missing contact points. Is there anyway to repair this? Would this be the cause of the problem? Since it works in the x4 slot on his Motherboard and it worked fine in my Motherboard so I am unsure that this is creating the problem?

they aren't missing that's factory it isn't a flaw. In the past we have had tested good graphics cards fail in tested good motherboards and basically what it boiled down to was incompatibility... it just didn't work that that mobo or graphics, for what ever reason they just didn't play with each other.

The only thing I can think of trying is flashing the bios to the newest version.

I have. Would it do any good to contact Gigabyte about the problem or should I just return the board to microcenter and get another board?

Side thing BUT seriously doubtful. Can the nvidia drivers be conflicting with the ati drivers and producing this effect?

Could the PSU be not powerful enough to handle both cards?

Did you try it with a single card first? And if you both cards at different times to see if 1 might be bad?

I have uninstalled each driver separately before installing the different card. Also, I only put in each card one at a time.

How much wattage and what type of PSU do you have? This plays a major part of cards not working.

The 4850x2 is a single card with dual gpu chips on it

Out of curiousity to go along with what cdoublejj was saying have you ever heard of forcing a PCIE slot to run a lower amount of lanes? Basically what you do it tape off the pins on the PCB with packing tape or something similar and force to run in 8x or 4x or 1x mode. I'll see if I can dig up the article I was reading about it in.

I don't think it will do any good but if you can force 8x/4x in the 16x and it work maybe you can call it the mobo.

in all honesty i would exchange theboard if it's still an option. btw drivers won't prevent board from displaying the bios.
