New board, must I reninstall w7?

Thread Starter
So getting a new and different board tomorrow from my previous one, do I absolutely positively have to do a fresh install of win 7? I would rather not lose what info I have on the drive.

You don't have to do a reinstall of windows after a mobo swap. I'd just uninstall the chipset drivers first, then do the swap.

Yes. Any time you swap out a major component like that (other than GPU, CPU, RAM, PSU, or other cards), it requires a reinstall.

Do a fresh install and have what you want to keep backed up. I'd suggest installing whatever programs and drivers you'll need beforehand.

I move componets (NIC's, hdd's, motherboards) around quite a bit. What happens is soon after all is up and running you will get a Microsoft message that a new combination of components is detected and re-activation is required. For me with a hdd loaded with an OS that I know is going to move I simply do not activate in the first place. You will have time to handle the saving of files but why not do it before you swap the board out, perhaps the rig has already died.I have noticed this running for a month on an unactivated OS is a feature that is not found in Win 8.With my Win 8 install the install could not proceede without a key installed during the installation.

I can't back anything up or uninstall anything right now since the replacement board is due to an RMA. As long as windows will run long enough for me to transfer my data before a fresh install I am not too worried.

I went from a 1090t and Crosshair IV mobo to a 980x and Rampage III Extreme mobo without a reinstall of windows, was fine. Later on I did the reinstall.

Awesome. I figured it would be okay, just wasn't entirely sure if it would give me massive problems. Just needed to know if I would have a window no matter how small to transfer data before new install. Thanks to everbody for the fast and informative responses. Thread can be closed now.

put the new board in, during windows install either partition the drive, or just install without formatting, and it will throw all of your info (program file windows files user files) into a folder on your base of c drive and call it something like windows OLD. then transfer around whatever you need or backup what ever, then format and re install. or delete the old folder when you get everything out of it
