Back off your user folder to an external drive, wipe and reinstall. Reinstall programs, put user data back into their respective folders.

Always backup important stuff...

But just uninstall drivers, then switch out the hardware.
Win7 will boot to an error, require a restart and then you can set bios settings and boot into windows.
Just need to re-activate.

It isn't XP. I migrated from a Q9550 LGA 775 setup to my current LGA 1155 3770k. Then I upgraded my system Hard Drive to an SSD. I did not need to reinstall. My RAID even migrated smoothly with no issues.

After you migrate you can then do an "In Place Upgrade" which will reset the registry while still maintaining your programs. I downloaded the latest Install Release and wanted an easy repair disk without having to do all the service packs again.

Win7 is easy smile.gif

Still, to avoid any issues, I just blow away windows and reinstall when I swap boards (unless it is the same boards). More work, but you get a squeaky clean OS afterward. Well worth it if you ask me.

you can install alot of hardware without an OS re-install but the motherboard is not one of them sorry mate. You can install memory, graphics and even a new CPU without an OS install but the board replacement will require it. Just to be safe I'd reinstall with a MB replacement.

Well, I ended up doing a fresh install. MSI did not even bother to send me a driver disc along with the board, I'm lucky and glad I was able to use my wifes pc to download the stupid ethernet drivers

I never reinstalled win7 when I changed everything but the hdd. Went from a Athlon fx 2500 duo core 4gb asus board to and t1100, 16gb, gigabyte board. And everything reinstalled itself with plug and play drivers.

It's better to do a fresh install. But it's not needed. But always back up your stuff regularly. And fresh install windows.

With xp you had to do a fresh install. But win7 made the os transferable to a new setup easier.
