but that $30 psu might not be the only thing that dies with it

There's no doubt about it, never skimp on the thing that is going to be powering every other thing in your system. Just no.

Agree 100%. other components could be fried that cost more than 30$ (CPU, mobo, GPU or all of them)

If you can get the UL number that is written on the PSU sticker:

ul-number-example,0-K-255332-13.png

There you can do an online query to find out who's the OEM.

Hi
Sorry about reviving an old thread, but I just bought the above mentioned Power Supply and while researching it came across this thread.
The UL Number is E308604, so the P/S is a Coolmax, brand.

Anything else that may give a hint as to which model it is, or would they make an entirely different model to spec for Retail Plus?
Even the Retail Plus site doesn't have the correct model on their Website which doesn't look good.

Thanks
Bob

@adridu59. I never bought it, stuck with a corsair hx650.

To bob, after doing a tad more research of cool max, i've read a lot of concerns about psus blowing. According to other forums they've lost their gpus and mobo blew.

It's junk, plain and simple. It only has 570 watts available on the 12v which, for a modern PSU, would pass for at most a 600 watt PSU, not 700. The large amount of power available on the 3.3 and 5v rails indicates an older design topology combined with its lack of active PFC (the red switch on the back makes it passive). Plus it likely couldn't handle its 12v being loaded all the way to 570 watts in the first place. Plus if it's made (or supplied) by coolmax it's pretty much guaranteed to be junk.

Actually, if you look in the upper left corner of the picture, right below the brand name, it says "Reliability and Consistency". Obviously this particular PSU must be pretty decent, or I don't think it would say that.

You can rely on Coolmax's PSUs to be consistently failure-prone.
