I don't think performance should suffer too much with RAID 5... unless the controller is seriously crap! (I've always used Adaptec cards so I don't know what the PERC cards are like). But of course, YMMV.

It's hard to tell without doing it. Another advantage of raid 5 is that i could use 3 disks for the array and one as the hotspare.

I've spent about an hour on this now, but i'm pretty sure i am going to go with raid 10 for safety's sake. If we do run out of space, then at least i'll have a reason to do some upgrading.

I eventually got it into raid 10. It wasn't easy, as it couldn't be done in the raid manager, it had to be done from dell openmanage. Then it took 23 hours to initialize.



It's not a true benchmark as it was in use at the time but it's a pretty noticeable upgrade from raid 1. Double the space too.
