Connecting 2 unmanaged gigabit switches

I have a little bit of a problem. I spent friday in my attic laying down cat5e to rooms. Today i've connected it all and 2 of the rooms are only running at fast ethernet speeds. I've tested all the cables individually and i think i've found the problem.

The layout goes: router --> switch --> attic cat5e --> switch --> computers. Do i need a crossover cable between the 2 switches? They're cheap tplink 5 port umanaged gigabit switches? ATM every cable is wired straight though 568B (white orange, orange, white green, blue, white blue, green, white brown, brown).

To test this i plugged the back of my computer into a 50m cat5e and bypassed the first switch and plugged it straight into the second switch near the router, and it works at gigabit.

TLDR I didn't research before laying cable. I need your help.

Nearly all recent switches support auto-MDIX, so you can use straight through or crossover. I think I know the switches you speak of and they support auto-MDIX. Maybe. If you give the switch model, can help further.

Thanks for the quick reply. One is a TL-SG1005D (5 port) and the other is a TL-SG1008D (8 port).

This is somewhat bad news. Can you think of any other reason why one is running at Gb and the other is fast ethernet? The possibility does exist that i've wired them wrong. I'm going to try plugging the cat5e cable that runs from the first switch to the second right in to the back of my computer just to double check, but i did check for this before i pinned the cable to the wall.

Damn...

The uplink shouldn't cause the whole switch to drop to 100mb. If you wired that wrong and the switch didn't like it, assuming it would drop to 100mb, only the uplink would drop to 100mb - clients on the remaining ports should be running at gigabit (not ideal, but this it what should be happening).

If you wired it wrong it shouldn't even work at all. Maybe you should test with a cable tester just in case.

To clarify, when the two switches are uplinked, clients connected to the switch ports are only running at 100mb? (Is it both switches affected or only one?)
And then when they are not uplinked, both switches run at gigabit speeds?

If i read your post right only two clients are running at 100mb? While the rest are at 1000mb? If so, check the clients. Make sure they have Gigabit NIC. If so make sure the NIC is configured correctly

Sorry i didn't make it clear. The clients on the 2nd switch (5 port). All run at gigabit speeds. However when they try to connect to the server which is on the 8 port switch (switch 1). File transfers are only 100Mbit.

It's only the uplink that seems to be suffering. I'm really hoping i don't need to replace the whole run of cable. I checked it for kinks and it's well under 100m. I'm going to try re-terminating both ends of the long run of cat5e, but i can't do that for a few hours.

Edit: to clarify, every client runs at gigabit speeds. except the 3 on the 5 port switch in the other office. However i don't think the uplink between the 2 switches is gigabit.

The TP-LINK has lights that should show different color depending on the link speed.

When you say the 3 clients on the 5-port don't run at gigabit, you mean that they are not gigabit capable, right? (Could interpret that a few ways).

Anyway, appears as if the actual issue is that the uplink is not gigabit right? - check the lights on the switches to verify this... Though slow file transfers are enough I guess!

A bad cable could cause the switch to drop ports to 100mb. This is a common cause - best to test it with a cable tester.

When you say the 3 clients on the 5-port don't run at gigabit, you mean that they are not gigabit capable, right? (Could interpret that a few ways).

A bad cable could cause the switch to drop ports to 100mb.

That's exactly right, yeah. They're all green right now, on both switches. I actually just went to check the 3rd office switch (same TP link 5 port as is in mine) and all those lights are green too, even though i know for a fact that 2 of those clients are only fast ethernet. So i don't think my model supports different colour lights for different link speeds.

I've just run a spare length down the hallway and my office is now gigabit. I'm going to try re-terminating this cable at both ends before i replace it. It's not a big job replacing it, but it's such a small, dusty, dark space in the loft that i don't want to go up there again lol.

Ah yep you're right - for some reason I was thinking of a BILLION switch (which had the colored lights) I used to use with the 8-port TP-LINK.

There might be some interference (though with Cat5e this shouldn't be a problem) .. and so likely the termination is not done properly. Easiest thing to do as a first step is to re-punch at the jack just in case you didn't go far enough the first time to pierce the cable. Done this many times and has solved various issues without the need to re-run the cable fresh.

EDIT: doh.gif That's what you said you were going to do anyway hahaha.

I'm so happy right now. I did my end of the cable first, plugged it straight into the back of my computer just to check. Green light on the NIC.

Ran crystal disk mark and i'm getting 75MB/s to the network drive. Even works in the switch proving that it does auto-sense.

Thanks a lot for your help. I was afraid i hadn't planned it enough and spent the whole weekend coughing up dust for no reason. The shared uplink is now 1GB on this switch. and it's only shared between 3 users so i doubt we'll saturate it in the near future.
