will this power a sli 8800gtx setup - Page 2

When I replaced my 7900gt with my new 8800gtx, my benches went through the roof, but oc'd the system would lock, reboot etc. randomly. I did a powers supply calc, (can't remember which one) and wound up at 612 watts.

I had a spare 400w coolmax laying around, so I jumpered pins 14 & 17 on the atx connector and am currently using it to power the gpu. It's sitting on the desk outside my TT armour. No more random "blinking".

I'd like to tidy things up a bit and get a 850 - 1000w psu, but I'm a bit short on $$ after the g80.

Xmas is coming!!

When the INQ tested their 8800SLI setup, they used an OCZ 700W PSU without any problems.I would say get the best PSU for your budget, but you really dontneed a 1kW psu by any means.

Well they are power hungry cards..If i ever Get one im just going to buy a second PSU just for GPU'S
post #16 of 24
The 750 silencer will not power GTX's due to the fact that it doesnt have 4 6PIN plugs. That graph is the SYSTEM power consumption NOT the card only.

Quote:
Now, the highest-end graphics boards can pull a maximum of 75 Watts from the motherboard via the PCIe x16 slot, and every 6-pin PEG power connector will yield additional 75 Watts. So, in case of 8800GTX and R600XTX, we are talking about 75+75+75 = 225, or a maximum of 225 Watts. This is the maximum amount of power that will be eaten and dissipated by an Nvidia G80 and AMD R600 based product.
Anatech said SLI gtx's Pull something like 440w combined

So probably a bit less than that for the actual card itself....

I recommend

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817159020

and if you just have to have it certified.....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817256006

both I have used and tested very stable power and either will run anything you can throw at them......

But, to answer your original post no the power supply you list will not even run 1 8800 series card even if thats all it was connected to and you had a separate PSU for you mobo, hdd, and optical drives.

That PSU goes in an extra 5.25" bay and is for powering only the graphics cards. You keep your current PSU in the back of your case to run the rest of the system, while this goes in a spare optical bay to power the card(s). That means all of the PSU's power is going straight to the graphics card. It can source 300 watts RMS and 400 watts peak. According to the graphs from above, the loaded system draw (not just the cards) is just above the 300 watts that this PSU can supply. I'd be wholely confident that the afforementioned supply would be able to run a single 8800GTX. SLI, on the other hand, would be pushing it. You'd probably have to get two.
