I always thought my N61JQ (i7 720QM + Radeon 5730M) had good battery life at 2 hours from new, right before I sold it it'd gone down to a bit over an hour.

This is the best option IMO. Having a gaming laptop for note taking is absurd. You are shortening the life of your gaming laptop when a cheap $200 laptop would do, you can use google docs or dropbox for your notes (If you are still in school) it is by far the most cost efficient option. If you really don't need to game on the run, then a cheap laptop and a souped up desktop is an even better option. But if you need mobile gaming, then yeah grab a nice gaming laptop as well
