OP should just get an Ultrabook + Gaming laptop for that budget, he'd then have the best of both worlds.
I always thought my N61JQ (i7 720QM + Radeon 5730M) had good battery life at 2 hours from new, right before I sold it it'd gone down to a bit over an hour. rolleyes.gif

This is the best option IMO. Having a gaming laptop for note taking is absurd. You are shortening the life of your gaming laptop when a cheap $200 laptop would do, you can use google docs or dropbox for your notes (If you are still in school) it is by far the most cost efficient option. If you really don't need to game on the run, then a cheap laptop and a souped up desktop is an even better option. But if you need mobile gaming, then yeah grab a nice gaming laptop as well thumb.gif

This is the route I take. Current laptop's an Asus U36SG (13.3" 1366x768, AL-MG alloy, 19mm thick, 3.7lbs, 6-8 hours battery, i7-2620M, G 610M). Considered getting an ultrabook but they tend to bet more expensive and have shorter battery life compared to some thin and light laptops.

I personally have never been a fan of sonys computers, theyre expensive, and to be honest the ONLY time ive ever had them in my hands, is when they were broken and people needed help fixing them. But this was years ago now... It still makes me hesitate. How is the construction of the one you have?
Unfortunately most notebooks are going to be of plastic construction. The Sager NP8130/8150 line is all plastic, it doesnt feel cheap (maybe a little compared to my metal bodied m18x) but they arent top of the line build quality either. Not sure about the MSI/Asus I mentioned, i must have overlooked where you said metal construction.
Samsung offers some nice, sleek metal/plastic bodied notebooks, not sure what they pack for hardware, a friend has a 15.6" samsung chronos (maybe) notebook that had a decent amd gpu paired with an i7, caching ssd with the hard drive, his only complaint was the space bar on the keyboard.
This.
I've seen so many people with broken Sonys. I think i'd like to avoid them.

Yea, i guess most will be plastic... i just don't want some crappy build quality. My acer, for example, i can literally bend and twist the entire thing, and the little plastic things on the vent have all broken off... while my Alienware m11 which is made of metal is rock solid.

My current laptop(s) are an Acer Aspire 7741g and an Alienware M11x R1. The Acer was the laptop that i had originally bought, but the problem is it's massive (17 incher) and it's got really bad battery life. The only reason i have the Alienware is because i bought it off a technologically challenged person for $50, but really i've ended up using it instead of my Acer due to the ridiculously long battery life. Problem with the alienware though is it's kind of slow. (It has a core 2 i think...), screen is dim and TOO small.

Ill take that m11x off of your hands for cheap if it is too slow tongue.gif

I would look at the Np6350 and Np6165 which are a step down from the np8130/np8150 in size and horsepower GPU wise, the MSI GE60 (these look awesome to me) and check out samsungs Series 7. I don't know if you will get the 650m in one, I think the fastest is a 640m, but i dont think that will satisfy the need.

I also know Asus (despite the troubles people have with tech support) is coming out with a 14" gaming series notebook with GTX 660m in it.

I have found Asus' build quality to be very good, and I have had 2 Asus G60 series laptops between myself and a friend without issue, both of which are still running perfectly, plus my Aunt, Sister, Mother, and Brother In Law all have asus laptops without any trouble for well over a year each now. But again, it appears their tech support is atrocious from some stories here on OCN.

Here is an Asus N56VZ that has a 650m in it.

Here is an MSI GE60 with 660m in it

Here is an Np6350 with 660m in it

Not gaming a lot then a GT650 is more than enough ASUS UX51VZ-XH71 this is a sexy thin laptop i7 i7-3612M upgradable to 16gb and a GT650 gb if you want best performance take this
Sager NP9370
dont want sager but still want high performance take this MSI GT70 0NE-452US and you can still take a look at the AlienWare or also the NEW RAZER BLADE and to be fair the ASUS G75VW-DH73-3D for me i will take 1-sager 2-alienware 3-MSI 4-asus 5- Asus zenbook 6-razer blade,if you want a light laptop then the Razer and the zenbook are your best shots if you are going to sacrifice for the performance then the Sager NP9370,Alienware m18x and the Msi GT70 are the best gaming laptops around,or a cheaper options identitycrisis already summed it up
