Teardown treatments give me two feelings, the first of which is joy - at looking at the innards of the device on the operating table. Secondly, a feeling of sickness - because I couldn't imagine busting my $500+ device open.

M$, that's worse than Apple. mad.gif

I like you, please don't turn to Apple.

So about a $200 dollar profit? That's rediculous

Not like this is their first OS device and not like they're including Microsoft Office and its not like they had to pay 10billion in Research and Development this past year.....

Throw in R&D, marketing, shipping, logistics, cost to build OS, die and tooling... Probably a 30 dollar profit. This is just what the components cost.

Does a tear down include manufacturing processes?

Can it tell me how much it costs to research/produce the "VaporMg" casing?

This.

Maybe not cost to build the OS, but simply taking the price of the components as a sold figure for how much it takes to build a product is nonsensical.

M$ surely spent millions of dollars designing a brand new product VS apple's yearly refresh that probably costs much less.

I thought I read somewhere that M$ looked up to Apple's business model and strives to be more like them.

i never really understood the whole individual pricing of components, of course you are *not* going to be able to get it at cost.

Distribution, marketing, R&D, paying retail store employees, etc all take money.

It's pretty much expected to see a near 100% mark up.

edit: a word.

exactly, i dont see apple including $159 dollar microsoft office on an ipad, i havent seen apple develop a special OS for ARM in a long time, R&D eats most of that profit, trust me. this is microsofts first step into this market, and they didnt follow anyones design, they made it truly different and useable in an on the road buisness sense that other tablets just dont have.

Microsoft spent the most in R&D than any company this past year. Apple charges over double the cost of it's products, even though they're pretty much refreshes and slight bumps in specs.....But no innovation.

Let microsoft get into the game with a product that can be affordable enough to deliver, and be a strong business case.
