[TT] Surface gets teardown treatment, costs $271 to build the 32GB model. - Page 2

Its not that microsoft is trying to be like apple. They are just trying to create a good product (check) and recover the money they invested (in progress). The price point is also expecting a large volume of units to be sold, it would be higher if MS thought it would undersell.

People are silly if they think MS or apple are making straight profit. grain of salt guys, grain of salt.

Noted: apple is just adapting and improving on a proven platform, so one can assume there is less R&D overhead compared to MS. Since MS had to create it from scratch.

Still good to see that they should be able to make the project profitable, it is their first attempt at hardware design in years.

Because slightly changing a products specification on a yearly bases, costs the same as researching and creating brand new manufacturing processes, am I right?

Give me your bank details and I'll transfer $271 to create a microsoft surface tablet.

Anyone who achieves it gets a big bag of internets.

R&D and manufacturing costs are offset by the ridiculous reduction in material costs through bulk wholesale discounts. It likely costs around $271 to make in total.
Most tablets are sold at an insanely high markup. Which is why we need Google and Amazon in this market, to drive prices down to a reasonable level.

OMG MS is making a profit. Not surprised at the overhead their company is as bloated as their programming.
why overthink things, check the kindle fire ,plain rubberised back etc .no drama.it just work, same for apple, just plain anodized aluminium.(what big rig fuel tank have been using for 20 years.)ms spend r&d time on useless stuff.a group spent million for what?the click sound of one component!are they serious?those effort would have been better spent on making the thing great else where.why not wrist kinect?

Well that's because they're......you know......

do you actually think the surface will surpass the ipad at selling? lol thats like the best joke. nearly all of OCN doesnt understand the fact that the brand and people's want and need to showoff sells, not the hardware in it. i know the i5 surface would be as powerful as a ultrabook, but do you actually think a rich soccer mom cares about it when she can buy an ipad and show off to her friends? people are in a desperate need of attention, and apple is kinda taking advantage of it.

Apple and Microsoft will always have a bigger markup than Android because they have to pay their employees to build the OS, while Android is FOSS, so its simply a matter of grabbing some binaries from the hardware manufacturer and compiling the latest AOSP. If they tried to sell at the <10% markup that many Android tablets sell for they wouldn't be able to pay their big software teams.
