So you just derailed your own thread then. Microsoft overcharge on their software, Apple overcharge on their hardware. Their business practices are the same as well.
Please tell me how many times has M$ sued for frivolous patents?

Actually, if you were alive during the 90's, you'd know where the term "Evil Empire" came from. Microsoft was the focus of the US's largest Antitrust suit in history because of their backhanded business practices. They single handedly destroyed a large amount of tech companies and startups to gain marketshare, blackmailing, bribing, and threatening everyone they could.

Unfortunately, Apple didn't learn this lesson, and is now paying a hefty price. However, that's neither here nor there, in this topic. The Topic at hand is the build cost of the tablet.

So? They couldn't possibly increase their R&D at the rate their revenue is increasing.

Monopolists will often cite as evidence of their creativity the large expenditures that they make for research and development. However, they are often reluctant to provide details of how such funds are actually used. Indeed, such expenditures could easily be in large part used for purposes other than promoting truly innovative research and development. That is, they could be used for such things as (a) developing improved techniques to discourage competition, (b) developing techniques to encourage users to upgrade to new versions of their products, (c) searching for potential new rival technologies to acquire or suppress, (d) paying lawyers to intimidate firms with potentially rival technologies and (e) lobbying.

In this thread it's mostly irrelevant though, since this all seems to be happily accepted as part of the overhead.

edit: not playing favorites. This is pretty much across the board of the big names these days.
Yeah you've a good point. We don't know what R&D covers specifically.

I don't see why people are so worked up about how much it costs for this hardware. Sure you could build it yourself for maybe $200, but this isn't any ordinary peice of hardware that can be put together on Newegg. I think people fail to realize that a Windows 8 license costs almost $100 all by itself. Plus the amount of man labor put into running the factories to make these (employee's need a cut too). Sure it may be jacked up a little more then its material value, but its how it all suits you. People pay $2,000 for crappy Ultrabooks, yet people complain about the mid $500 priced item go figure...

Yea dude there was an episode of The Simpsons where Bill Gates came with goons and "bought out" Homer's website, by which I mean smashed up his house.

I concur, when was the last time MS spent this much resources on hardware? No doubt xbox would be one on the list.

Hopefully the surface will jumpstart a good momentum on the other partner brands on their own systems (Dell, Asus, and etc).

Indeed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft

It was huge. Of course, back then the internet was really an infant. There was Prodigy and AOL and a few small ISPs. Dial-up was the norm (you were hauling ass if you had a 56K modem), and this story was huge on the News (both TV and *GASP!* the radio.) I mean... Think of 90% of the news stories out there today, but focus all of that attention on this particular story. In fact, in 1998 when all this went down, Mr. Gates was assaulted with a pie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IcStolRUJg
