As has been said Microsoft would have spent a lot of money to build this tablet, and you need to factor that in when looking at its cost. They definitely aren't making all that profit off every device. However don't dismiss the money Apple invests into their products either.

people stop going crazy over what it takes to build the item vs how much you are paying.

all the talk abou R&D and cost of manufacture, shipping ect is irrelevant. its just simply a figure of how much it would cost for you to buy each individual piece, what it looks like and what new ideas can be formed from them

Please... Microsoft ripping people off just like Apple ripping people off just like Samsung ripping people off.
WAKE UP PLEASE. NONE OF THEM LIKE YOU.

Go to a local college, take a business course or get a job in manufacturing. Microsoft are probably making around $25-$30 profit per Surface.

and its also most likely that this is the first MS designed and made W8 tablet that is "successful" the sunk cost would be more expensive vs hardware refreshes/minor aesthetic changes on iPads etc.
