[WashingtonPost] Apple’s iPad slips as Android tablets tick up in market share for third quarter

According to estimates from IDC, Apple’s market share took a dive from 65.5 percent to 50.4 percent during the third quarter. Samsung, meanwhile, climbed to 18.4 percent of the market — the largest share that the company has had since the iPad’s introduction in 2010. The company has been marketing the Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab line heavily as it ramps up to the holiday season, and those efforts seem to have borne fruit.

Posting this for those that believed that the Nexus 7, Note 10.1, Transformer Prime, and other Android high performing tablets weren't going to work. For those that swear Android users are "cheap" and don't buy into expensive tablets. rolleyes.gif

Apple's market share will continue to shrink as tablets become more and more mainstream. That doesn't necessarily mean that Apple will generate less revenue though. There's tons of great tablet options out there now as the Android tablet experience continues to improve.

I think the biggest contributor in this was Amazon with the Kindle Fire which I think has sold over 10 million units now. The 10.1 doesn't seem to have sold very well yet, which is unfortunate because it is pretty damn awesome with it's "true" multitasking features; where you can have multiple apps open on-screen in a desktop OS fashion. Would have been great to get that on the Nexus 7/10.

That's because people are becoming more aware to a quality tablet vs what's cool. As seen in the phone market, good job people. thumb.gif

Android tablets win in price, not quality.

Sometimes it's hard to convince consumers to part ways with $300-600 for a shiny new iPad when the competition offers a very similar experience for far less. The sweet spot for tablets "bang for your buck" is around $250, and none of Apple's devices fall into that category. Because of that, you're paying for the Apple name, not the device. It is apparent too because apple makes a decent amount of money per unit sold, where as the competition makes very little profit but makes up for it in software and accessory sales.

Consumers are starting to do their research on these devices. Since that is the case, expect Apple tablet market share to continue to drop each quarter.

I want to be perfectly clear on this: The iPad is a very good tablet. It really is. Most people today are price-conscious consumers, though, and $200-250 sounds a lot better than $329+ for the mini or $499+ for the iPad 4.

The think is i can keep my iPad 3 far longer then you can keep a Android Tab.

Yes, this is exactly why. Apple can no longer charge such a price premium for their devices, because they are no longer the only player in the game. Consumers have wised up like you said. For the most part, the same apps that Apple has can be had on Android as well. Apple's hardware is pretty good, but not double the price good. Most people just surf the internet and maybe look at photos or play some casual games on their tablets anyways. You can do that with any device.

That is very likely no longer the case. Have you seen how the Nexus 7 stacks up against other tablets when overclocked to 2.0 GHz? It's pretty impressive.
