Most modern HDDs are safe for at least 50 G (AFAIK) while on. That's like a car crash at 50 mph (80 km/h)+ so you should be fine.

There's a disclaimer to that. HDDs can only handle that for a couple of milliseconds or so (e.g. a short drop, etc), not continuous movement.

Yeah, but unless you sprint with your laptop on, it would generate enough G force to do damage. Walking and going up/down stairs you would only generate around 0.2 G at the most.

My MacBook Pro has had the same old HDD in it for the past 3 years, I use insomnia so that it does not sleep when the lid is shut, therefore the hdd, screen, everything is still on.
The poor thing is dragged around campus to every lesson all day every day, for the past 3 years I've had it. It's been dropped in puddles (shallow ones barely wet) used as an umbrella, dropped down concrete stairs, falls off my bed when I fall asleep with it. Torrent's all night every night over the school network resulting in continuous hdd activity. Also it backs up to BackBlaze online unlimited storeage for £5 a month every day, along with my Apple Time Capsule in my dorm.

Never, has it ever, skipped a beat.
(apart from one screen snapping off when it was under some blankets and I sat on it, of which apple replaced for free)!!

I thought the 120 GB + iPod classic used an SSD. IIRC the iPod with the largest HDD is the 8 GB one from many years ago.
